About This Attraction
The Queen of the Ali Lakes
1.Located in Coqen: County (Cuoqin) within the Ali Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Zhari Namco (Zhari Nanmucuo) stands as a majestic testament to the raw beauty of the Changtang Plateau. With an altitude of 4,613 meters and a surface area of approximately 1,023 square kilometers, it holds the title of the largest lake in the Ali region and the third-largest lake in all of Tibet (after Namtso and Siling Tso). In the Tibetan language, "Zhari" refers to a holy mountain, and "Namco" means "Sky Lake," giving it the poetic designation of the "Lake of the Holy Mountain and Sky." Situated in the vast basin between the Gangdise Mountains (Gangdisi) and the northern plateau, this massive saltwater lake is often described as a brilliant turquoise gem dropped onto the roof of the world, offering a landscape of profound silence and grandeur that captivates every traveler who braves the "Great Northern Loop" to reach it.
A Landscape of Gold and Blue
2.The visual splendor of Zhari: Namco is defined by its stunning color palette and unique geographical features. The lake's water is renowned for its clarity and depth, shifting shades from azure to deep sapphire depending on the sunlight and weather. A distinctive feature of the lake is its irregular coastline, which carves out large bays and peninsulas. The most famous of these is the Munuo Mountain (Munuo Shan) peninsula on the east bank. From the high vantage point of the Munuo Mountain Viewing Platform, visitors can look down upon a magnificent arc-shaped sandbar that stretches into the water. Under the golden light of sunset, this sandbar glows radiantly, earning it the name "Golden Silk Belt," creating a breathtaking contrast against the deep blue water and the distant snow-capped peaks.
A Sanctuary for Highland Life
Despite the high altitude and harsh environment, Zhari Namco is a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. The wetlands surrounding the lake are a paradise for high-altitude wildlife. It is a common sight to see herds of Tibetan antelopes (Chiru) and Tibetan wild donkeys (Kiang) grazing on the golden pastures along the lakeshore. The lake itself serves as a habitat for various waterfowl, bringing movement and vitality to the desolate beauty of the plateau. For photographers and nature lovers, the juxtaposition of these wild creatures against the backdrop of the vast lake and the towering Gangdise snow peaks creates a picture of harmonious coexistence that is rare to find elsewhere.
Legend and Spirituality
3.Like many lakes in: Tibet, Zhari Namco is steeped in myth and spirituality. According to local legend, the lake is the wife of the mountain god Mount Gangdise. The vast body of water is said to be the repository of her spirit, reflecting the sky and the mountains in an eternal embrace. While it may not have the mass pilgrimage crowds of Manasarovar, it holds a deep, quiet sanctity for the local herders. Piles of Mani stones and fluttering prayer flags can be found along its banks, marking it as a place of worship where the natural and spiritual worlds intersect. Standing by the lake, listening to the wind and the waves, one can feel the ancient pulse of the Changtang Plateau.
