The Emerald of the Gobi Desert

1.Located in the northwest of Ganzhou: District, Zhangye City, Gansu Province, Zhangye National Wetland Park serves as a refreshing ecological miracle in the arid expanse of the Hexi Corridor. Situated just 10 kilometers from the city center, this expansive park is the "kidney" of the city and is widely praised as the "Most Beautiful Wetland in the Northwest". Covering a vast area along the banks of the Heihe River, it offers a stark and poetic contrast to the dry yellow sand and red Danxia landforms typical of the region, transforming the landscape into a lush, water-rich oasis often described as "Jiangnan of the North" (lush southern scenery in the north).

A Sanctuary of Reeds and Birds

2.The soul of the park is the Heihe: River, China's second-largest inland river, historically known as the "Weak Water" (Ruoshui). This water source nurtures a vibrant ecosystem defined by vast seas of reeds and cattails that sway in the wind. It is a critical habitat for wildlife, serving as a paradise for birdwatchers. Tens of thousands of migratory birds, including swans, grey cranes, and bar-headed geese, stop here to rest or nest, particularly during the migration seasons. Today, it remains culturally significant to the local diverse population, including the Han, Hui, and Yugur people. The Yugur people, an ethnic minority unique to Gansu, cherish the wetland as a "Golden Belt" bestowed by the Dragon King. During traditional festivals, one might encounter locals singing "Flower" (Hua'er) folk songs or performing dances near the water to pray for a good harvest, showcasing the region's warm hospitality.
