The Hidden Gem of the Hexi Corridor

1.The Yulin: Grottoes, also known as the Ten Thousand Buddha Gorge, are located approximately 70 kilometers south of the Guazhou County seat in Jiuquan, Gansu Province. Situated within a dramatic canyon carved by the Yulin River, the grottoes are distributed across the eastern and western cliffs, mirroring each other across the valley floor. As a vital component of the Dunhuang grotto system, Yulin is often referred to as the "Sister Caves" of the Mogao Caves, sharing a similar historical trajectory and artistic lineage.

A Millenium of Spiritual Art

2.The creation of the Yulin: Grottoes spans over a thousand years, beginning during the Northern Wei Dynasty and continuing through the Western Wei, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Western Xia, and Yuan Dynasties. Today, the site preserves 43 active caves, featuring over 5,200 square meters of murals and 270 colorful statues. While smaller in scale than Mogao, Yulin is world-renowned for the exceptional quality of its later-period art, particularly the masterpieces from the Tang and Western Xia dynasties.

The Zenith of Western Xia Craftsmanship

Yulin Grottoes reached an artistic peak during the Western Xia period (11th–13th centuries), producing some of the most exquisite Buddhist art found along the Silk Road. Cave 3 and Cave 2 are celebrated for their "Water-Moon Guanyin" murals, which blend traditional Buddhist iconography with a distinctively refined and Sinicized aesthetic. These murals are characterized by delicate line work and a serene atmosphere, reflecting the high level of cultural fusion between the Tangut (Western Xia) and Han Chinese traditions.

The "Pure Land" of the Tang Dynasty

Among the many treasures, Cave 25 stands out as a pinnacle of Tang Dynasty mural art. The "Pure Land of the South" murals found here are legendary for their vibrant colors, complex compositions, and lifelike depictions of celestial musicians and dancers. The isolation of the site within the desert canyon has helped preserve the intensity of the mineral pigments, allowing visitors to witness the Tang artistic vision in a state of remarkable clarity.
