Tracing the Ancestors: The Eternal Majesty of Tianshui Fuxi Temple
About This Attraction
The Cradle of the Humanistic Ancestor
1.Located in the heart of: Tianshui, a city renowned as the "Small Jiangnan of Longshang," Fuxi Temple stands as a magnificent monument to the legendary "Humanistic Ancestor" of the Chinese nation. Tianshui serves as a vital intersection on the southern route of the ancient Silk Road, and this temple is its spiritual anchor. Fuxi is revered as the head of the "Three Sovereigns" and the progenitor of Chinese civilization, and this temple is the largest and most complete complex dedicated to his memory in China.
A Masterpiece of Ming Dynasty Architecture
The temple was established in 1490 during the Ming Dynasty (the 3rd year of Emperor Hongzhi's reign). Known historically as "Taihao Palace" or the "Renzong Temple," the complex is a textbook example of ancient Chinese court-style layout. The temple faces south and is organized into two gates and three successive courtyards. Walking through the central axis, visitors encounter grand structures including the Opera Stage, the Archways, the Ceremonial Gate, and the crowning Xiantian Hall. The architectural integrity has remained remarkably preserved for over 500 years, making it a key national cultural relic.
The Symbolic Bagua Cypresses
2.One of the most striking features of Fuxi: Temple is the presence of ancient cypress trees. Within the courtyards, 64 ancient cypresses were originally planted in strict alignment with the positions of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. These trees are not merely landscaping but are living symbols of the mathematical and philosophical wisdom Fuxi is said to have gifted to humanity. Today, many of these "Bagua Cypresses" still stand, their twisted branches reaching toward the sky like ancient guardians of the Tao.
Artistic Treasures and the First Trigrams
3.The Xiantian: Hall, the core of the complex, houses the largest Ming Dynasty statue of Fuxi in China. The statue depicts the ancestor draped in leaves, with a piercing, wise gaze, holding the "Xiantian Bagua Taiji Plate"—the origin of the Eight Trigrams. The hall itself features exquisite craftsmanship, from the intricately carved lattice windows to the ceiling murals that represent the ancient cosmos. For travelers, Fuxi Temple offers more than just sightseeing; it provides a deep connection to the origins of the "Descendants of the Dragon" and the intellectual foundations of the Chinese spirit.
