About This Attraction
A Geological Anomaly
1.Deep within the heart of the Qaidam: Basin in the Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province lies a geographical wonder that defies the typical definition of desert landscapes: the Wusute Water Yadan Geopark. While "Yadan" landforms—wind-eroded ridges and hills found in arid regions—are a common sight in the northwest of China, Wusute stands alone as the world's only discovered large-scale Yadan landscape submerged in water. This unique phenomenon creates a surreal environment where the dry, golden sculptures of the Gobi desert rise dramatically from the shimmering expanse of a vast lake, blending the harshness of the desert with the serenity of an aquatic oasis.
The Fleet of a Hundred Ships
2.The visual impact of Wusute Water: Yadan is often compared to a massive naval fleet sailing across a boundless ocean. The Yadan formations here, shaped by millions of years of wind erosion, vary in size and shape, resembling castles, animals, and, most notably, warships. Because the lake water submerges the lower portions of these clay and sandstone hills, the exposed tops appear to float on the surface. Under the high-altitude sun, the water creates a mirror-like reflection of the golden pillars, enhancing the illusion of a mysterious armada frozen in time. This distinct scenery has earned it the nickname "The Fleet of a Hundred Ships" (Baijian Dui).
The Formation of a Miracle
The creation of this landscape is a rare geological coincidence. Originally, this area was a typical dry Yadan field formed by the relentless scouring of wind and rain over eons. However, changes in the local hydrology caused the Nalenggele River to change course and flood the low-lying Yadan area, gradually forming the lake we see today. The water here is rich in minerals, often displaying a vibrant turquoise or deep blue hue that contrasts sharply with the arid yellow and brown tones of the rock formations. This interplay of water and rock creates a "Highland Aesthetic" that is both desolate and vibrant, offering a stark departure from the monotonous gravel plains of the surrounding Gobi.
An Oasis for Explorers
3.Located conveniently off the famous: G315 National Highway, Wusute Water Yadan has become a must-visit stop for travelers exploring the "Grand Loop" of Northwest China. Unlike the fleeting glimpses of Yadan seen from the car window in other parts of the Qaidam Basin, this park allows visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape. You can take a boat tour to weave through the "ships," ride off-road vehicles on the surrounding dunes, or simply walk along the boardwalks to capture the interplay of light and shadow at sunset. As night falls, the park becomes a prime location for astrophotography, with the silhouette of the Yadans framed against the Milky Way in the clear plateau sky.
