About This Attraction
The Highest Populus Forest in the World
Located about 60 kilometers away from the urban area of Golmud City in Qinghai Province, the Golmud Populus Euphratica Forest stands as a testament to the resilience of life. Situated in the Tolahai (meaning "Place with many Populus trees" in Mongolian) area, northwest of the Alton Quke Grassland, this forest holds a unique distinction: it is the only Populus euphratica forest in Qinghai Province and is recorded as the highest altitude Populus euphratica forest in the world. Unlike the low-lying forests found elsewhere, these trees grow in the harsh, high-altitude desert environment, standing as "Golden Guards" against the wind and sand of the plateau.
An Oasis Between Mountains and Salt
The geographical setting of the forest is nothing short of dramatic. To the south, it relies on the majestic Kunlun Mountains, creating a stunning backdrop of snow-capped peaks against the desert floor. To the north, it faces the vast and desolate Gobi salt flats. Sandwiched within this desertification zone, the forest appears as a precious emerald (or gold in autumn) embedded in the barren land. A seasonal river, the Tolahai River, flows through the sandy terrain, carving beautiful curves as it winds around the forest, providing the essential lifeline for this ecosystem.
A Unique Desert Ecosystem
1.The Golmud Populus Euphratica: Forest is not just about the trees; it is a complex ecological system. Within the forest, the Populus trees are accompanied by a variety of desert vegetation, including reeds, saxaul (Haloxylon), red willow (Tamarix), salt claw (Kalidium), and camel thorn. This vegetation supports a diverse range of wildlife, and visitors might spot pheasants, foxes, wolves, and wild hares seeking shelter among the trees. The Populus euphratica is the only tree species that can naturally form a forest in such arid desert and sandy conditions, making it a critical barrier against desertification.
The Living Fossil of the Desert
The Populus euphratica is often called a "Living Fossil," with a history spanning 3 to 6 million years. These trees possess an incredible will to survive. Their root systems can extend horizontally up to 15 meters and penetrate downwards to 13 meters to tap into deep groundwater. They are masters of endurance, capable of surviving temperature extremes from +39°C to -39°C, thriving with less than 50mm of annual rainfall, and withstanding salt, alkali, and gale-force winds up to 26 meters per second. In autumn, the leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow, creating a breathtaking contrast with the clear blue plateau sky and the yellow Gobi sands, attracting photographers and nature lovers from around the world.
