1.Introduction: The Holy Land of the Three Kingdoms
2.Located at: No. 231 Wuhouci Street in the Wuhou District of Chengdu, Wuhou Shrine (Temple of Marquis Wu) is widely recognized as the most prestigious memorial site for Three Kingdoms culture in China. Often praised as the "First Shrine of Zhuge Liang under Heaven," it holds the unique distinction of being the only shrine in China built to commemorate both a monarch (Liu Bei) and his minister (Zhuge Liang) in a single complex.
Covering an area of approximately 150,000 square meters (about 37 acres), the shrine is a serene sanctuary of red walls, grey tiles, and ancient cypress trees, situated right in the city center next to the bustling Jinli Ancient Street. While it is not a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit and a National 4A-level Tourist Attraction, drawing history enthusiasts and families from around the world.
History: A Legacy of Loyalty
3.The history of Wuhou: Shrine dates back to the end of the Shu Han period (around 263 AD), when locals built a temple to honor Zhuge Liang shortly after the kingdom fell. During the Tang and Song dynasties, the site grew in scale, famously immortalized by the poet Du Fu in his lines, "Where is the shrine of the Prime Minister to be found? Deep in the cypress forest outside the Silken City".
The current layout is largely the result of a reconstruction in 1672 during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. The shrine embodies the Confucian virtue of loyalty, integrating the Temple of Liu Bei (Han Zhaolie), the Hall of Zhuge Liang, and the Huiling Mausoleum into one cohesive architectural masterpiece.
Architectural Highlights and Cultural Treasures
4.The Hall of Zhuge Liang: This is the heart of the complex. In the center stands a gilded copper statue of Zhuge Liang, holding his iconic feather fan and wearing a silk headscarf, flanked by his son and grandson. The hall is famous for the "Couplet of Conquering Hearts" (Gong Xin Lian), which philosophizes that "He who conquers hearts overcomes all opposition... he who judges the situation incorrectly fails regardless of severity or leniency".
5.The Hall of Liu Bei: As the monarch, Liu Bei is honored in the main hall. He is flanked by statues of his sworn brothers, the fierce General Guan Yu and General Zhang Fei, capturing the spirit of the "Oath of the Peach Garden".
6.Huiling Mausoleum: Located at the back of the complex is the tomb of Liu Bei. Surrounded by a red wall and towering ancient cypresses, this moss-covered mound is historically regarded as the Emperor's true resting place, adding a solemn and authentic atmosphere to the visit.
7.The Three Perfections Stele: The shrine houses the "San Jue Bei" (Stele of Three Perfections), dating back to the Tang Dynasty. It is renowned for combining excellent article content, superb calligraphy, and fine stone carving skills, making it a priceless cultural artifact.
Cultural Experience
Wuhou Shrine is more than a museum; it is a "living fossil" of the Shu Han spirit. Visitors can immerse themselves in the stories of "Devotion until death" (Jue Gong Jin Cui) while wandering through the elegant gardens. During the Spring Festival and mid-July (Lunar Calendar), the shrine hosts lively temple fairs featuring Sichuan Opera face-changing performances and Hanfu parades.
