About This Attraction
The Parting of the Waters
Located deep within the Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, West Taijinar Lake offers one of the most surreal driving experiences in China. Situated along the famous G315 National Highway, this massive salt lake is geographically distinct because the highway cuts directly through the center of the water. This unique infrastructure creates a stunning visual phenomenon that has earned it the nickname "Twin Lakes" or "Yin-Yang Lakes." As travelers drive along this stretch, they are flanked by water on both sides, but the waters are rarely the same color. It is a place where the stark, industrial beauty of salt mining meets the raw, artistic palette of nature, set against the backdrop of the vast Qaidam Basin.
A Tale of Two Colors
1.The most defining feature of West Taijinar: Lake is the distinct color difference between the two sides of the road. Due to varying salinity levels and mineral concentrations on either side of the embankment, the water on one side often appears a deep, rich blue, while the other side shimmers in a vibrant, emerald green. This contrast is particularly striking when viewed from an aerial perspective (drone photography), where the black asphalt of the highway acts as a sharp divider between the two jewels of the desert. The colors can shift depending on the weather and the angle of the sun, ranging from turquoise to sapphire, making it a photographer's dream.
An Oasis in the "Treasure Bowl"
2.The lake is situated in the Qaidam: Basin, a region often referred to as a "Treasure Bowl" due to its rich mineral resources, particularly salt and oil,. West Taijinar is a saline lake, and the high salt content prevents much vegetation from growing along its immediate banks, creating a clean, mirror-like surface that reflects the high-altitude sky and distant mountains. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the arid beauty of the Gobi desert, with wind-eroded landforms and endless horizons. This isolation adds to the lake's charm, making it feel like a secret ocean discovered in the middle of a dry wilderness.
Gateway to Water Yadan
3.West Taijinar: Lake is not just a standalone destination; it is often the prelude to the nearby Water Yadan (Shui Yadan) Geopark. As the lake extends, it merges with unique Yardang landforms—hills of rock and sand formed by wind erosion—that are partially submerged in the water. This combination of blue water and golden desert hills is rare and spectacular. A road trip here usually involves stopping at the "U-shaped highway" nearby and then crossing the West Taijinar Lake, allowing visitors to experience the diverse geological wonders of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau's northern edge.
