About This Attraction
The First Guardian of the Land
Located at mile marker 2952 on the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (G109), deep within the vast and desolate Hoh Xil (Kekexili) region, stands a modest but spiritually monumental compound: the Sonam Dargye Nature Protection Station. This was the first non-governmental nature protection station established in China. It serves not merely as a stopover for travelers venturing into the "Life Restricted Zone" of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, but as a solemn monument to human courage and environmental conscience. The station was built to honor Sonam Dargye (Suo Nan Da Jie), a Tibetan hero and government official who gave his life defending the wildlife of this region. Standing against the backdrop of the Kunlun Mountains, the station represents the frontline of defense for the fragile high-altitude ecosystem and its inhabitants, particularly the endangered Tibetan Antelope.
The Legend of Sonam Dargye
The station’s name memorializes a tragic yet inspiring history. In the 1980s and 90s, Hoh Xil was plagued by poachers hunting the Tibetan Antelope for its fine underfur, known as "Shahtoosh," which was fashioned into luxury shawls sold in Western markets for up to $16,000 apiece. On January 18, 1994, Sonam Dargye, then the party secretary of the Western Working Committee of Zhiduo County, engaged in a gunbattle with 18 poachers. He fought alone until he bled the last drop of his blood, freezing into an ice sculpture in the bitter cold to protect the antelopes. His sacrifice shocked the nation and ignited a massive environmental protection movement in China, leading to the establishment of this station and the eventual strict protection of the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve.
A Sanctuary for Life
Today, the station functions as a base for anti-poaching patrols, environmental education, and wildlife rescue. One of its most heartwarming features is the Wildlife Rescue Center, often referred to as the "Kindergarten for Baby Antelopes." During the migration and calving season, rangers often rescue abandoned or injured baby Tibetan antelopes and raise them here until they are strong enough to be released back into the wild. Visitors can often see these gentle creatures up close in the fenced areas behind the station. Inside the main building, there is a small exhibition hall displaying photos of the anti-poaching struggle, skulls of poached animals, and information about the unique biodiversity of Hoh Xil, educating every passerby about the heavy price paid for conservation.
The Wilderness of Hoh Xil
1.Surrounding the station is the vast Hoh Xil: National Nature Reserve, an area often called the "Third Pole" of the world. In Mongolian, Hoh Xil means "Blue Ridge" or "Beautiful Girl". Despite the harsh climate—with average temperatures below freezing and thin air—it is a paradise for wildlife. The station offers a vantage point to view the "Three Treasures of the Plateau": the Tibetan Antelope, the Wild Yak, and the Tibetan Wild Ass. The Wild Yak, known as the "Lord of the Wilderness," can weigh over 1000kg and charge at speeds capable of overturning SUVs, surviving at altitudes up to 6000 meters. The landscape here is stark and grand, characterized by rolling alpine grasslands, permafrost, and crystal-clear lakes, presenting a raw "Highland Aesthetic" that is both terrifying and mesmerizing.
