About This Attraction
The Gate of Cangshan
1.Located in the Yangbi Yi Autonomous: County, on the western slope of the majestic Diancang Mountain (Cangshan), Shimenguan (Stone Gate Pass) is a spectacular natural wonder often referred to as the "Gate of Cangshan." It serves as a dramatic natural barrier and a historical gateway on the ancient trade routes. The pass is formed by two towering cliffs that stand facing each other, rising hundreds of meters into the sky like a giant stone gate that has been split open by a divine axe. This V-shaped canyon is not only a geological marvel but also a vital part of the Cangshan Erhai National Geopark. Unlike the gentle beauty of Erhai Lake on the eastern side, Shimenguan presents the rugged, precipitous, and awe-inspiring face of the Cangshan mountain range, offering a stark and breathtaking contrast for travelers exploring the Dali region.
A Historic Pass on the Tea Horse Road
Shimenguan is steeped in history, serving as a crucial choke point on the ancient South Silk Road (Bonan Ancient Road) and the Tea Horse Road. For centuries, caravans carrying tea, silk, and salt trekked through this perilous canyon, their horses' hooves leaving deep indentations on the stone paths that are still visible today. It was a strategic military post and a trade artery connecting vital regions. The famous Ming Dynasty traveler and geographer Xu Xiake once visited this site, marvelling at its cliffs, waterfalls, and stone gates in his travel diaries. Walking along the ancient plank road today, visitors can almost hear the echoing bells of the horse caravans and feel the weight of history that permeates the canyon walls.
The Thrill of the Cliffside Plank Road
2.One of the modern highlights of: Shimenguan is the exhilarating Cliffside Plank Road. Stretching over 1.6 kilometers along the precipitous cliff face, the path winds its way through the canyon, offering heart-stopping views of the abyss below and the towering rocks above. A section of this path features a Glass Skywalk and a glass viewing platform, allowing brave visitors to walk on air with a direct vertical view of the valley floor. This "Skywalk" experience provides a unique perspective of the geological formations and the rushing river below, blending the thrill of adventure with the stunning beauty of the alpine canyon landscape.
Cascading Waterfalls and Crystal Clear Streams
The canyon is home to a series of magnificent waterfalls, the most famous being the Shimenguan Waterfall. Water from the icy peaks of Cangshan cascades down the cliffs, creating a thunderous roar and a misty spray that often forms rainbows in the sunlight. Below the falls, the water gathers into clear, deep pools such as the Phoenix Pool, reflecting the sky and the surrounding cliffs. The stream winds through the valley, flanked by lush vegetation and strange rocks, creating a dynamic landscape where the power of water meets the solidity of stone. The interplay of the waterfalls, streams, and rocks makes it a paradise for photographers and nature lovers.
Relaxing Hot Springs
After a hike through the canyon, Shimenguan offers a perfect way to unwind: natural Hot Springs. Located within the scenic area, these hot springs are fed by geothermal waters from deep within Cangshan. Set amidst the tranquil mountain environment, the hot spring pools allow visitors to soak in warm, mineral-rich water while admiring the rugged canyon views. It is a rare opportunity to experience the therapeutic power of nature in such a dramatic setting, making Shimenguan a comprehensive destination that combines hiking, history, adventure, and relaxation.
