Located over 20 kilometers from Lanzhou in Shichuan Town, Gaolan County, the Shichuan Ancient Pear Orchard is a spectacular ecological and cultural landmark. It is recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) and serves as a "living fossil" of human agricultural history. Spanning an area of 3,939 mu, the orchard is home to over 10,000 ancient pear trees, with many exceeding 400 years of age. It is widely considered the largest and best-preserved ancient orchard in China.

The Legacy of the Yellow River

The orchard's origins date back to the Ming Dynasty during the Jiajing era. Migrants from Shanxi combined their knowledge with local techniques to create a unique irrigation system utilizing Yellow River water. Historically, traditional waterwheels and specific soil management techniques—mixing loess with silt and sand—allowed these ancient trees to thrive in the rugged Northwest environment. This synergy between human ingenuity and the river's flow remains a cornerstone of the region's cultural identity and agricultural resilience.

A Masterpiece of Seasonal Color

Shichuan is celebrated for its dramatic seasonal transformations that offer a feast for the eyes. In April, the vast canopy of blossoms turns the river valley into a sea of white, often described as "spring snow". As autumn arrives in September and October, the leaves turn to vibrant shades of gold and red, creating a landscape known as the "Earth Painting" (Dadi Caihui). The ancient, gnarled trunks of the trees, some shaped like natural sculptures by centuries of growth, provide a striking contrast to the lush foliage and the flowing river.
