About This Attraction
A Sacred Sanctuary in the Clouds
Located within the dramatic landscapes of the Ganjia Secret Realm in Xiahe County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, the Baishiya Karst Cave is a site of immense geological, religious, and archaeological significance. Situated at the foot of the magnificent White Stone Cliff (Baishiya) which rises like a massive screen behind the grassy plateau, this cave is renowned as the highest-altitude and largest-volume limestone cave in the Tibetan regions,. Unlike typical tourist caves illuminated by colorful lights, Baishiya retains a raw, mysterious atmosphere. It has long been revered as a holy site by local Tibetans and is situated near the Baishiya Temple and the Tso Ngon Monastery, forming a spiritual triad of cliff, cave, and temple.
The Home of the Denisovans
While the cave has been a religious sanctuary for centuries, it gained global scientific fame in 2019. Archaeologists discovered a human mandible fossil here dating back approximately 160,000 years. This fossil was identified as belonging to a Denisovan, an extinct archaic human species. This groundbreaking discovery proved that humans inhabited the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau tens of thousands of years earlier than previously thought, making it one of the world's top ten archaeological discoveries of that year. Visiting the cave today means standing in the very spot where prehistoric humans survived the Ice Age, offering a profound connection to the deep history of mankind.
Legends of Padmasambhava
In Tibetan folklore, the origins of the cave are steeped in mysticism. Legend holds that the cave was opened by the spiritual power of Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). Inside the cavern, natural rock formations are said to resemble Buddha figures, which appear spontaneously on the cave walls. A fascinating local myth suggests that the sand inside the cave has miraculous properties: for the hungry and pure of heart, the sand transforms into cheese (tsampa/curd) to sustain them; however, if one attempts to take the sand out of greed, it reverts to ordinary dirt.
Exploring the Underground Realm
1.The interior of Baishiya Karst: Cave is a complex labyrinth of geological wonders. It extends deep into the mountain, reportedly stretching for kilometers, though tourists usually explore the front sections. The cave features a "Ten Thousand Buddha Heap," a massive formation of stalactites that resembles a congregation of deities. Visitors must often use flashlights or headlamps to navigate the dimly lit passages, which contain underground rivers and intricate rock formations. The journey into the dark, cool depths of the cliff provides a stark and thrilling contrast to the sunny, open grasslands outside.
