The Flower of Tang-Tibet Unity: Princess Wencheng Temple and the Sacred Cliffs of Yushu

A Monument to a Millennium-Old Journey

1.Located in the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous: Prefecture of Qinghai Province, the Princess Wencheng Temple (Wencheng Gongzhu Miao) stands as a profound historical testament to the ancient Tang-Tibet Ancient Road. Also known as the Great Sun Tathagata Buddha Hall (Da Ri Ru Lai Fo Tang), this temple dates back to the 15th year of the Zhenguan reign of the Tang Dynasty (641 AD). It marks the historic journey of Princess Wencheng as she traveled from Chang'an (modern-day Xi'an) to Tibet to marry the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Among the many relics left along this ancient route, this temple is considered the earliest, most magnificent, and most precious historical cultural site associated with the Princess in the region.

Carved in Stone and Faith

The temple is not merely a building but a sanctuary integrated into the living rock. It is situated in a place revered by the local Tibetan people as a "Dongtian Fudi" (Cave Heaven and Blessed Land) on the plateau. The origins of the temple are steeped in devotion and memory. Legend and history intertwine to tell us that after Princess Wencheng passed through this area and continued her journey to Lhasa, the local Tibetan population, wishing to honor her and retain her spirit, carved statues into the cliff face based on her image. These carvings formed the foundation upon which the temple was subsequently built. Today, the temple enshrines the Great Sun Tathagata Buddha, and the main statue is flanked by eight Bodhisattvas, all carved directly into the cliff wall, showcasing a unique blend of artistic styles that reflects the cultural exchange of that era.

For over 1,300 years, the Princess Wencheng Temple has served as a powerful symbol of the unity and deep bond between the Han and Tibetan peoples.
