About This Attraction
A Miracle of Gold on the Plateau
1.When the warm wind of July crosses the Qilian: Mountains, a magnificent golden ocean suddenly emerges on the plateau at an altitude of 3,000 meters. This is not a mirage, but the Menyuan Rape Flower Sea (Menyuan Baili Youcaihuahai), a masterpiece co-created by nature and human agriculture. Located in Menyuan Hui Autonomous County, Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, this scenic area spans the basin north of the Haomen River and west of the Qilian Mountains. With a planting area of nearly 600,000 mu (approx. 40,000 hectares), it forms the largest contiguous rape flower planting belt in northern China. Unlike the delicate flower fields in the plains of southern China, the rape flower sea here is known for its boundless magnificence and the shocking contrast between the golden yellow fields and the eternal snow-capped peaks.
The Symphony of Snow and Flowers
2.The most unique charm of: Menyuan lies in its "three-dimensional" landscape. The background is the towering Qilian Mountains, particularly the Gangshika Snow Peak, which remains covered in snow year-round. The middle ground is the vast, rolling expanse of golden rape flowers interspersed with patches of highland green barley, creating a vibrant color palette of gold and emerald. The foreground often includes the rushing Haomen River or the quaint villages dotted among the fields. Under the deep blue plateau sky and fluffy white clouds, this scenery forms a breathtaking oil painting that stretches for dozens of kilometers, aptly named the "Hundred Mile Flower Sea".
The Best Viewing Perspectives
To fully appreciate this visual feast, visitors should head to specific vantage points. The Yuanshan Viewing Platform (Yuanshan Guanhualtai) is the core location, situated in the middle of the flower sea. From here, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view where the golden ribbons of flowers meet the green barley and the snowy mountains. For a more magnificent "God's eye view," the Daban Mountain Observation Deck (Dabanshan Guanjingtai) is unmissable. Located at the entrance to the Menyuan Basin at a high altitude, it offers a shocking panoramic view of the entire golden basin cradled by the mountains, especially spectacular during sunrise when the light hits the snow peaks and the mist floats over the gold. Additionally, the town of Qingshizui offers a unique perspective where Islamic-style mosques with moon-topped domes rise from the sea of flowers, blending cultural charm with natural beauty.
A Cultural and Ecological Treasure
Menyuan is not just a scenic spot but a hub of diverse cultures. It is a Hui Autonomous County where Hui, Tibetan, and Tu people live in harmony. Every July, the local "Rape Flower Cultural Tourism Festival" turns the flower sea into a stage for horse racing, folk songs, and cultural displays. Geographically, this area is a vital ecological barrier and a historic stop on the Silk Road and the ancient Qiang migration route. The specific type of "small rape" grown here is also rich in oil content, making it a significant agricultural asset as well as a tourism resource.
