Sculpted in the Clouds: The Artistic Grandeur of Maijishan Grottoes
About This Attraction
Located approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Tianshui City in Gansu Province, the Maijishan Grottoes are carved into an isolated peak in the Qinling Mountains that strikingly resembles a traditional Chinese wheat stack. Standing 142 meters high, this landmark is a pivotal node on the UNESCO World Heritage list for the Silk Road's Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor.
The history of the grottoes began during the Later Qin period (384–417 AD) and continued through more than ten dynasties, including the Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing. Unlike the stone carvings of Longmen or Yungang, Maijishan is celebrated as the "Oriental Sculpture Museum" because it houses over 7,800 clay sculptures. The local purple sandstone conglomerate was too fragile for fine stone chiseling, leading ancient artisans to perfect the art of clay modeling, creating figures that are noted for their lifelike expressions and humanistic warmth.
A massive earthquake in 734 AD significantly altered the site, causing the central cliff face to collapse and splitting the grottoes into distinct Eastern and Western sections. Today, visitors traverse an intricate network of sky-high plank roads suspended 20 to 70 meters above the ground to explore the 221 remaining caves. The most iconic sight is the East Cliff Great Buddha, a 16-meter tall triad of statues that has stood watch over the valley for over a millennium.
1.Key artistic highlights include: Cave 133, known as the "Thousand Buddha Hall" for its numerous small statues and intricate stone steles, and Cave 44, which contains a Western Wei-style Buddha renowned for its "eternal smile" and elegant drapery. The grottoes provide an invaluable record of the Sinicization and secularization of Buddhist art as it traveled along the Silk Road into the heart of China.
