The Iron Chain Legend Above the Roaring Waves: Crossing the Luding Bridge
About This Attraction
The Iron Spine Over the Dadu River
Suspended dramatically over the turbulent waters of the Dadu River, the Luding Bridge (Luding Qiao) is not merely a means of crossing; it is a symbol of architectural resilience and historical heroism. Located in Luding County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, this bridge sits at an altitude of approximately 1,321 meters. As a critical gateway on the ancient Tea Horse Road and the modern Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318), it connects the Sichuan Basin to the Tibetan Plateau. The bridge's stark, iron-chain construction creates a powerful visual contrast against the rugged high-plateau gorges, resembling a "hard painting" forged from steel and stone that embodies the strength of the human spirit in the face of nature's formidable barriers.
A Masterpiece of the Kangxi Era
1.The history of the Luding: Bridge dates back over three centuries. It was constructed in the 41st year of the Kangxi reign (1702) of the Qing Dynasty. The bridge is an engineering marvel of its time, measuring 103 meters in length and 3 meters in width. Its primary structure consists of 13 heavy iron chains. Nine of these chains form the bottom to support the wooden planks that serve as the walkway, while two chains on each side serve as handrails. These massive chains are anchored securely into the cliffs on either bank, allowing the bridge to withstand the fierce currents of the Dadu River below. Walking across the swaying planks, with the river roaring beneath, offers visitors a visceral sense of the danger and ingenuity involved in its creation.
The Legend of the Red Army
While its architectural age is impressive, Luding Bridge is perhaps most famous globally for a pivotal moment in 20th-century history: the "Flying Over Luding Bridge" during the Long March. In 1935, soldiers of the Red Army faced a life-or-death struggle to cross the Dadu River while under enemy fire. The wooden planks had been partially removed, leaving only the bare iron chains. The soldiers famously crawled along these chains to secure the bridgehead, a feat of bravery that is celebrated as a turning point in Chinese history. Today, the bridge stands as a "Red Tourism" landmark, allowing visitors to walk in the footsteps of those who traversed these iron links under the most desperate of circumstances.
A Gateway to the West
Luding Bridge serves as a vital transition point. Geographically, it marks the ascent from the lower basins into the mountainous Tibetan regions. Historically, it was a choke point on the trade routes where tea from the interior was exchanged for horses from the west. The bridge is surrounded by the steep canyon walls of the Dadu River valley, creating a breathtaking backdrop for photography. Standing on the bridge, one can gaze at the rushing waters that carve through the landscape, appreciating both the natural grandeur of the gorge and the human determination that spanned it centuries ago.
