The Crown of Yushu

Perched dramatically on a hillside overlooking the town of Jiegu (Gyegu) in the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, stands the magnificent Jiegu Monastery. Its full Tibetan name is "Jiegu Donzhu Ling," which translates to "Jiegu Land of Accomplishment" or "Jiegu Island of Success". As the principal monastery of the Sakya School (also known as the "Flower Sect" due to its tri-colored walls) in the Yushu area, it holds a prestigious position in the religious hierarchy of the region. The monastery is renowned for its grand architectural scale, a large population of monks, and a wealth of cultural relics, making it a famous landmark throughout the Tibetan areas of China.

An Architectural Marvel on the Cliff

1.The layout of Jiegu: Monastery is a striking example of Tibetan architecture adapting to the terrain. Built against the mountain, the complex consists of numerous halls and monk dormitories scattered in a staggered yet harmonious arrangement across the slope. From a distance, the layered structures resemble a majestic multi-storied pavilion rising towards the sky. This strategic position not only provides a commanding view of the Yushu valley below but also imbues the site with a sense of spiritual authority and solemnity. The monastery's design reflects the distinct style of the Sakya tradition, often characterized by imposing walls and intricate decorations.

Halls of Worship and Learning

The heart of the monastery is the main assembly hall, known as the "Duwen Sangzhou Jiaqi" Sutra Hall. This massive structure was designed by a Sakya master and the first Jiana Living Buddha, Duo Xiang Song Que Pa Wen. It was constructed with the support of the Dege Zuoqin Monastery and is spacious enough to accommodate 1,000 monks chanting scriptures simultaneously. Beyond the main hall, the complex includes several other significant buildings, such as the Lecture Hall, the Dazhao Hall, the Maitreya Hall (future Buddha), and the residences of the Jiana and Wenbao Living Buddhas. Each hall possesses its own unique characteristics, housing various statues and scriptures that serve as a testament to the monastery's rich history.

A Legacy of High Monks

Throughout its history, Jiegu Monastery has been a cradle for spiritual leaders. It has produced many eminent monks and high disciples who have influenced the religious landscape of the region. Notably, the First Jiana Living Buddha, who is also credited with founding the famous Gyanak Mani Stone Pile nearby, was a master of cultivation associated with this monastery. His legacy continues to draw pilgrims who come to pay homage to the lineage of teachers who have maintained the Sakya traditions here for centuries.
