The Key to Lijiang: Unlocking the Scenic and Historical Wonders of Guanyin Gorge
About This Attraction
The First Key to Lijiang
Located just 17 kilometers south of Lijiang City and strategically situated near the Lijiang Sanyi Airport, Guanyin Gorge (Guanyinoxia) is famously known as the "Key to Lijiang" or the "First View of Lijiang." Historically, this narrow pass was the primary gateway connecting Lijiang with the outside world, serving as a vital choke point on the ancient Tea Horse Road. Unlike the high alpine scenery of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Guanyin Gorge offers a lush, serene blend of mountains, lakes, canyons, and waterfalls, presenting a softer, more pastoral side of the Yunnan plateau. It is a geological park that seamlessly integrates natural karst landscapes with rich ethnic culture and historical depth.
A Legacy of the Tea Horse Road
Walking through the gorge, you are treading on the same stones that mule caravans used centuries ago. This area was a bustling checkpoint where tea, horses, and salt were traded. The scenic area preserves the Ancient Street, lined with traditional Naxi-style architecture, workshops, and teahouses that recreate the atmosphere of the caravan era. You can see the historic Customs House, where officials once collected taxes and guarded the pass. The legacy of the Mu Chieftains, the local rulers of Lijiang, is also evident here, as this was a strategic defense point for their territory. The famous Ming Dynasty traveler and geographer Xu Xiake is said to have visited and praised the unique topography of this region.
The Spectacle of Water and Stone
The geographical heart of the scenic area is the dramatic canyon itself. Steep cliffs rise on either side, guarding the emerald waters below. The highlight for many visitors is the magnificent Guanyin Waterfall, which cascades down a sheer rock face into a deep pool, creating a misty, ethereal atmosphere often adorned with rainbows in the sunlight. The water from the falls feeds into Huanglong Tan (Yellow Dragon Pond), a calm, mirror-like lake where visitors can take a leisurely boat ride. Drifting on the water offers a unique perspective of the towering cliffs and the hanging willows, a stark contrast to the ruggedness of the surrounding mountains.
A Spiritual Sanctuary
1.The gorge is named after: Guanyin (Avalokitesvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion. According to local legend, Guanyin once blocked a vicious dragon here to prevent floods and protect the local people, leaving behind the scenic landscape we see today. Temples and shrines dedicated to Guanyin can be found within the area, where locals and visitors alike come to pray for safety and good fortune. The spiritual ambiance is enhanced by the natural quiet of the canyon, broken only by the sound of rushing water and bird calls.
Adventure and Leisure
Beyond history and nature, Guanyin Gorge offers modern amusements. One of the most popular ways to descend from the upper viewing areas to the valley floor is via the "Tunnel of Time", a long slide (toboggan run) that winds through the forest and tunnel, offering a thrilling ride with panoramic views. For those who prefer a slower pace, the electric train ride connects different sections of the park, allowing for a relaxed tour of the picturesque "Little Three Gorges" scenery unique to this part of Yunnan.
