The spiritual and architectural heart of the mountain is the Gangu Great Buddha, a massive cliffside carving that stands 23.3 meters high and measures 9.5 meters wide across the shoulders. This masterpiece is celebrated as the largest and oldest stone-core clay-molded Buddha in the entire Wei River basin. Seated majestically upon a lotus pedestal, the Buddha possesses a dignified and serene expression that has remained steadfast through a millennium of natural erosion. Architecturally, certain statues within the surrounding grottoes display a distinct Western Regions style, highlighting the multicultural exchanges that defined the region’s history.

A Millennium of Religious Harmony

The historical lineage of the Daxiang Mountain Grottoes began during the Northern Wei Dynasty, continuing to flourish through the Tang and Song periods. Construction reached its zenith during the Qing Dynasty, resulting in the grand complex of temples and pavilions visible today. Uniquely, the mountain has long served as a sanctuary where Buddhism and Taoism co-exist, with shrines dedicated to both faiths sharing the rugged slopes. This cultural synthesis is most vibrant during the annual temple fair held on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month, a tradition that draws massive crowds to celebrate the Buddha's birthday.

The mountain is composed of striking red Danxia landforms, which create a vivid visual contrast against the verdant cypress trees and the traditional red-walled architecture. To the east, the mountain provides a panoramic view of the Gangu county seat and the meandering Wei River, offering photographers a perfect vantage point where ancient ruins meet the pulse of modern life.
