About This Attraction
The Ancestral Temple of the Dege Kings
1.Located in Gengqing: Town, Dege County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, Gengqing Monastery (also known as Dege Gonchen) stands as a monument to the religious and political history of the Kham region. Situated along the Jinsha River valley and the National Highway 317 (G317), this monastery is not just a place of worship but the historical heart of the Dege Tusi (Chieftain) domain. Built on the mountain slopes at an altitude of approximately 3,800 meters, the monastery complex covers an area of about 10,000 square meters. It is renowned as the most important and oldest Sakya (Flower Sect) monastery in the Kham region, often referred to as the "Ancestral Monastery of the Kham Sakya".
A Fusion of Black and Gold
The monastery is distinct for its architectural style, which features the characteristic black walls of the Sakya tradition, symbolizing the protective deities like Mahakala. These dark walls contrast strikingly with the golden roofs and red eaves, creating a majestic atmosphere against the backdrop of the rugged valley and snow-capped mountains. The complex includes the massive Tsochin Great Hall (Main Assembly Hall), protector deity chapels (Gonkhang), a forest of stupas, and monk dormitories. Walking through its corridors, visitors are immersed in a solemn and mysterious aura, enhanced by the deep chanting of monks and the flickering light of butter lamps,.
A Treasury of Sakya Art
Gengqing Monastery is a treasure house of Tibetan Buddhist art, particularly famous for its black-background gold-line murals (Heidi Jinhui). These murals are unique to the Dege style, characterized by their solemnity, flow, and exquisite detail, depicting Sakya masters, meditational deities (Yidams) like Hevajra, and protective deities. The main hall houses statues of the Five Sakya Patriarchs (Sakya Gongma Nga) and other revered figures, crafted from copper and gold. The pillars and beams are intricately carved with dragons and auspicious symbols, reflecting a blend of Tibetan, Indian, and Nepali artistic influences that flourished under the patronage of the Dege kings,.
A Center of Tantric Practice
Unlike some monasteries that are purely academic, Gengqing Monastery places a heavy emphasis on Tantric practice and rituals. It maintains a Tantric College (Dratsang) where monks engage in rigorous studies of the Hevajra Tantra and the Path and Fruit (Lamdre) teachings. During major festivals, such as the Sakya Monlam or the Sorcerer's Dance (Cham) in the lunar 5th and 10th months, the monastery comes alive with masked dances performed by monks to drive away evil spirits and bring blessings. These dynamic rituals, combined with the monastery's rich heritage, offer visitors a profound glimpse into the spiritual life of the Kham Tibetans,.
