12-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Kunming to Dali (330km)
Depart from Kunming, the 'Spring City,' and drive west to Dali. The journey on the expressway offers views of the Yunnan plateau. Upon arrival, check in and explore the ancient Dali Old Town, with its traditional Bai architecture and cobblestone streets at the foot of Cangshan Mountain.

Day 2: Dali Exploration (0km drive)
A full day to explore the highlights around Dali. Take a leisurely drive or cycle around the shores of Erhai Lake, visiting lakeside villages and temples. Visit the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, the symbol of Dali.

Day 3: Dali to Lijiang (180km)
A relatively short drive north to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lijiang. Explore the labyrinthine streets, canals, and bridges of Lijiang Ancient Town (Dayan). Visit the Black Dragon Pool Park for a classic view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Day 4: Lijiang to Shangri-La (Zhongdian) (180km)
Ascend onto the Tibetan Plateau. En route, stop at the breathtaking Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world. Continue to Shangri-La (Zhongdian), the gateway to Tibetan culture in Yunnan. Explore the rebuilt Dukezong Ancient Town.

A spectacular drive with increasing altitude. Visit the magnificent Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, a 'Little Potala Palace.' Continue north, passing the First Bend of the Yangtze River (Jinsha Jiang). Arrive in Deqin, the last major town in Yunnan before Tibet.

Day 6: Deqin to Markam (Mangkang) via Yanjing (220km)
An epic day. Wake early for potential sunrise over the sacred Meili Snow Mountain (Kawagarbo). Cross into the Tibet Autonomous Region. Visit the ancient salt pans at Yanjing (Salt Well). Continue to Markam, a key junction town on the old tea-horse road.

A shorter driving day to aid acclimatization. Cross over the Lhagu La (Lahu Mountain Pass) and descend into the deep valley of the Lancang Jiang (Mekong River). Stay overnight in Rumei, a small town nestled in the dramatic river gorge.

Day 8: Rumei to Zogang to Baxoi (300km) - The Big Challenge
The most challenging driving day. Navigate the steep Jueba Mountain, cross the high East Dola Pass (over 5000m), and then tackle the legendary Nujiang 72 Bends—a series of dramatic switchbacks descending into the Nujiang (Salween River) valley. Overnight in Baxoi.

Day 9: Baxoi to Ranwu Lake (90km)

Drive along the picturesque Parlung Tsangpo River valley. Pass through the former 'Tongmai Tianxian' (Tongmai Danger Zone), now tamed by modern bridges and tunnels. Enter the lush, green region of Nyingchi, known as 'Tibet's Jiangnan' (South of the Yangtze).
