Why This Route?

This is the ultimate western Sichuan road trip, combining the sacred peaks of Yading with the cultural richness of Danba and the dramatic scenery of Mount Siguniang. Best from May to October. The route requires good physical condition due to high altitudes (up to 4,500m). Allow flexibility for weather delays. Book Yading accommodation in advance during peak season.

Chengdu → Ya-Kang Expressway → Kangding → G318 → Xinduqiao → Yajiang (467km) → G227 → Litang → Daocheng (283km) → S216 → Yading (109km) → return → Xinduqiao (453km) → G248 → Tagong → Danba (144km) → S303 → Maerkang (185km) → G317 → Xiaojin → Rilong (178km) → G350 → Balang Pass → Chengdu (226km)

Road Conditions

This route includes multiple high-altitude mountain passes (Zheduo 4,298m, Haizi 4,500m, Balang 4,523m). Roads are generally paved but winding with many hairpin turns. The Ya-Kang Expressway section is excellent. Some sections between Yading and Xinduqiao may have rough patches. Check weather conditions before departure - snow possible from October to April on high passes.

Chengdu to Yajiang

Depart Chengdu via the Ya'an-Kangding Expressway. Pass through Kangding, cross the famous Zheduo Mountain Pass (4,298m), and continue through Xinduqiao to Yajiang. This is a long driving day covering diverse landscapes from basin to high plateau.

Yajiang to Daocheng

Drive south through stunning highland scenery. Cross Kaziwa Mountain Pass and the famous Haizi Mountain (4,500m) with its countless highland lakes. Descend to Daocheng, gateway to Yading. Visit the Bangpu Temple and enjoy the unique red grasslands in autumn.

Daocheng to Yading

Drive to Yading Nature Reserve, one of China's most pristine wilderness areas. Enter the reserve and take the shuttle to Luorong Pasture. Hike to view the three sacred peaks: Chenresig (6,032m), Jambeyang (5,958m), and Chanadorje (5,958m). Visit Pearl Lake and Five Color Lake if time permits.

Yading to Xinduqiao

Morning exploration of Yading if desired, then begin the return journey north. Drive back through Daocheng and Litang, the "World's Highest City" at 4,014m. Continue to Xinduqiao, famous for its golden autumn colors and Tibetan villages.

Xinduqiao to Danba

Drive north through Tagong Grassland with views of Mount Yala (5,820m). Visit Tagong Monastery, then continue through Bamei to Danba. Explore the famous Jiaju Tibetan Village, known as one of China's most beautiful villages.

Danba to Maerkang

Morning visit to Zhonglu Tibetan Village and the ancient watchtowers. Drive north along the Dadu River valley to Maerkang (Barkam), capital of Aba Prefecture. Visit the Zhuokeji Tusi Official Manor, a well-preserved Tibetan chieftain's residence.

Maerkang to Rilong (Mount Siguniang)
