Road Conditions
The G109 is mostly paved but can be rough, potholed, and subject to frequent repairs, especially after Tanggula Mountains. Expect long, remote stretches with minimal services. High altitude, unpredictable weather (snow, ice, mud), and potential traffic from heavy trucks are significant challenges.
9-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Xining → Qinghai Lake (150km)
Depart from Xining and drive to the majestic Qinghai Lake, the largest lake in China. En route, visit the culturally significant Kumbum Monastery (Ta'er Si), one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Settle in near the lake to enjoy the serene sunset.

Day 2: Qinghai Lake Exploration (环湖)
A full day to explore the perimeter of Qinghai Lake. Drive along the scenic West Lake Road, offering some of the best views. Visit Bird Island (seasonal, best from April to June) to witness thousands of migratory birds. Enjoy the vast blue waters and grassy shores.

Day 3: Qinghai Lake → Chaka Town (80km)
A short drive to Chaka Town, home to the famous Chaka Salt Lake. Often called the 'Mirror of the Sky,' its vast, flat, salt-crusted surface creates stunning reflections. Spend the afternoon walking on the salt, taking photographs, and visiting the salt sculptures.

Day 4: Chaka Town → Golmud (480km)
A long driving day across the Qaidam Basin, a vast, arid desert and salt flat region. The landscape is starkly beautiful and Martian-like. The drive is mostly straightforward on the G109. Arrive in Golmud, the last major city before the high Tibetan Plateau, and prepare for the ascent.

Day 5: Golmud → Tuotuo River (420km)
A challenging and spectacular day. Ascend onto the Tibetan Plateau, crossing the Kunlun Mountain Pass (4768m). Drive through the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve, a UNESCO site and habitat for Tibetan antelope. Visit the Sonam Dargye Protection Station. Overnight at Tuotuo River (源沱河), the source of the Yangtze River.

Day 6: Tuotuo River → Nagqu (410km)
Continue across the high plateau, reaching the journey's highest point at the Tanggula Mountain Pass (5231m), the traditional border between Qinghai and Tibet. The road conditions may deteriorate. Descend to Nagqu, a major town in Northern Tibet, for a well-earned rest at lower altitude.

Day 7: Nagqu → Damxung (160km)
A shorter driving day allows for a major detour to one of Tibet's great holy lakes, Namtso Lake. The turquoise waters set against the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains are breathtaking. Spend time at the lakeshore before driving to Damxung for the night.

Day 8: Damxung → Lhasa (170km)
The final leg of the drive brings you to Lhasa. The descent is noticeable as you enter the Lhasa River Valley. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and take the afternoon to relax and begin acclimatizing to the city's altitude (3650m). Explore the area around your hotel.

A full day to explore the highlights of Lhasa. Visit the iconic Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama. Then, explore the Jokhang Temple, Tibet's most sacred temple, and walk the pilgrim circuit around it in the bustling Barkhor Street market.
