Road Conditions
Extremely variable and challenging. Includes long sections of winding mountain roads, high-altitude passes, and potentially rough or damaged pavement. Key challenges include the steep zigzags of the 'Heavenly 18 Bends' and '72 Hairpin Turns', landslide-prone areas, and high-altitude driving. A 4WD SUV with high clearance is strongly recommended. Conditions are subject to weather and seasonal closures.
13-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Chengdu → Luding (280km)
Depart from the bustling plains of Chengdu. The drive heads west into the rising foothills of the Tibetan Plateau. The main stop is at the historic Luding Bridge, an iron-chain bridge famous for a pivotal crossing during the Long March. This day eases you into the mountainous terrain.

Day 2: Luding → Kangding → Xinduqiao (130km)
A short but significant climb. Pass through Kangding, the gateway to Tibetan areas. The highlight is crossing the first major high-altitude pass, Zheduo Mountain Pass (4298m). The landscape transforms here, offering the first vast, open views typical of the plateau. Arrive at Xinduqiao, known as a 'photographer's paradise' for its light and scenery.

Day 3: Xinduqiao → Yajiang → Litang (200km)
Enter the high-altitude world. Navigate the dramatic 'Heavenly 18 Bends' switchbacks. Arrive in Litang, one of the world's highest towns at over 4000m. Visit the magnificent Changqingchunke'er Monastery, a key center of the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Acclimatization to the altitude is crucial today.

Traverse the breathtakingly vast Haizi Mountain and Maoya Grassland, with distant snow mountains and grazing yaks. The day's climax is the first sight of the pristine 'Sister Lakes' (or 'Eyes of Tibet'), two stunning alpine lakes nestled at the foot of glaciers. Descend to the lower-altitude Batang.

Day 5: Batang → Markam → Rumei Town (150km)
A day of border crossing and deep gorges. Cross the Jinsha River (upper Yangtze) via a major bridge, marking the official entry into the Tibet Autonomous Region. Climb over the gentle Lahu Mountain Pass (4338m) before descending sharply into the deep, dry, and dramatic Lancang River valley, arriving at Rumei Town.

Day 6: Rumei → Zogang → Baxoi (300km) - Most Challenging Day
The most demanding driving day. Tackle the narrow, cliff-hanging road over Jueba Mountain. Then conquer the highest point of the entire G318 - Dongda Mountain Pass (5130m). The finale is the legendary '72 Hairpin Turns', a dizzying descent of switchbacks into the Nujiang (Salween) River valley. End in Baxoi.

Day 7: Baxoi → Ranwu Lake (90km)
A relatively short and scenic drive to one of the route's jewels. Ranwu Lake is a stunning alpine lake whose color changes with the seasons and weather. The surrounding glaciers feed into its milky blue-green waters. The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the serene lakeside views.

A full day to explore the Ranwu Lake area. The main excursion is to the Laigu Glacier, a group of ancient glaciers that descend almost to the village. Walk or take a local transport to view the striking blue ice. Alternatively, explore different sections of the expansive lake shore.

Day 9: Ranwu Lake → Bomi (130km)
Descend from the high plateau into the lush, forested, and humid valley of Bomi, known as 'Tibet's Switzerland'. En route, visit the Midui Glacier, accessible via a short hike and considered one of China's most beautiful glaciers. The climate and vegetation change dramatically today.

Drive through the spectacular Tongmai Gully, an area known for its dense forests and potential for minor landslides. The final push to Lhasa. This day primarily uses the modern Lhasa-Nyingchi Expressway, making for a faster and smoother drive alongside the Niyang River and then the Yarlung Tsangpo. The sense of anticipation builds as you approach the holy city. Arrive in Lhasa in the afternoon.

A full day to explore the highlights of Lhasa. Visit the iconic Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and a UNESCO site. Then explore the spiritual heart of the city, the Jokhang Temple, and the surrounding Barkhor Street pilgrimage circuit. Soak in the profound cultural atmosphere.
