Road Conditions
Extremely variable and challenging. Includes long stretches of paved but winding mountain roads, high-altitude plateaus, and potentially rough, unpaved sections, especially after bad weather. Frequent military checkpoints. Road conditions can change rapidly. A robust 4x4 vehicle is essential.
17-Day Itinerary
Day 1-2: Kashgar Arrival & Acclimatization (0km)
Arrive in Kashgar. Use the first day to apply for the essential Tibet Alien Travel Permit and Border Defense Permit at the local police station (process can be slow). Acclimatize to the altitude. On the second day, explore the fascinating Old City of Kashgar, Id Kah Mosque, and the lively Sunday Bazaar.

Day 3: Kashgar → Tashkurgan (300km)
Start the Pamir Highway section. Drive along the Karakoram Highway towards the Pakistan border. Stunning views of Kongur Tagh and Muztagh Ata peaks. Stop at the breathtaking White Sand Lake (Baisha Hu) and Karakul Lake with Muztagh Ata's reflection.

Day 4: Tashkurgan → Khunjerab Pass → Tashkurgan (150km round trip)
A shorter drive to the China-Pakistan border at the Khunjerab Pass (红其拉甫). Note: Access to the actual pass may be restricted; you can usually drive to a forward checkpoint. Experience the stark, high-altitude landscape before returning to Tashkurgan. Visit the Stone Fortress in the afternoon.

Day 5: Tashkurgan → Yecheng (500km)
A long driving day descending from the Pamirs. Leave the stunning mountain vistas behind as you re-enter the Taklamakan Desert basin. This is primarily a transit day to position for the true start of the G219 Tibet section.

Day 6: Yecheng → Sanjili Camp (360km)
The true G219 adventure begins. Drive from the desert into the Kunlun Mountains. Cross the first major passes: Kudi Daban (库地达坂) and the more challenging Mazar Daban (麻扎达坂, ~4950m). The landscape becomes increasingly barren and dramatic.

Day 7: Sanjili Camp → Hongliutan → Springs Lake (360km)
One of the most challenging and poignant days. Pass through Dahongliutan. Pay respects at the Kongxiwa Martyrs' Cemetery, a solemn memorial for soldiers. Cross the high Qitai Daban (奇台达坂, ~5170m). Overnight at the spartan and infamous 'Dead Man's Pass' (Springs Lake) at over 5000m.

Day 8: Springs Lake → Rutog (300km)
Exit Xinjiang and enter the Tibet Autonomous Region. The landscape opens up onto the vast, high-altitude plains of the Aksai Chin region. The highlight is reaching the stunning Bangong Co (Lake), a long, narrow lake that changes color, partly in China, partly in India.

Day 9: Rutog → Shiquanhe (120km)
A short driving day to Shiquanhe (Ali), the major town in Western Tibet. Use this day for essential rest and acclimatization after the grueling previous days. Stock up on supplies, refuel the vehicle, and take a hot shower.

Day 10: Shiquanhe → Zanda (200km)
Drive south into one of Tibet's most spectacular geological areas. Descend into the Grand Canyon of the Sengge Tsangpo (Indus River) and be awed by the vast, eroded Zanda Clay Forest. Arrive in the small town of Zanda, set within this surreal landscape.

Day 11: Zanda Exploration (0km)
A full day to explore the area. Visit the incredible ruins of the ancient Guge Kingdom, a lost civilization perched on a cliff face. Explore the caves and temples of this once-powerful 10th-17th century kingdom, offering breathtaking views.

Day 12: Zanda → Burang (330km)
A spectacular drive towards the sacred center of Tibetan cosmology. Pass by the holy Mount Kailash (Kangrinboqe) and the pristine Lake Manasarovar. These sites are deeply sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, and Bonpos. Overnight in Burang.

Day 13: Burang → Zhongba (300km)
Continue the journey east. Stop at Lake Rakshas Tal (Lagngar Co), also known as the 'Ghost Lake', located next to Manasarovar. The drive follows the southern route, with views of the Himalayan range in the distance.

Day 14: Zhongba → Saga (250km)
Drive through the vast, semi-desert landscapes. Pass by the unique Paryang Desert, one of the highest deserts in the world. The road runs alongside the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra River) headwaters.

Another long driving day, leaving the remote Ngari region behind and entering more populated Central Tibet. The landscape gradually becomes greener. Arrive in Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city.

A well-deserved rest day. Explore Shigatse, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. Visit the magnificent Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of Tibet's largest and most important monastic institutions.

The final leg of the journey. Take the well-paved Friendship Highway back to Lhasa. Upon arrival, celebrate completing one of the world's most epic road trips. Explore the Barkhor Street and see the Potala Palace.
