What is a Tibet Travel Permit?

The Tibet Travel Permit (also known as TTB Permit) is a mandatory document required for all foreign tourists visiting Tibet Autonomous Region. This permit is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau and must be arranged through a registered travel agency.

Types of Permits

1. Tibet Travel Permit (TTB)

Required for all foreign visitors to enter Tibet. This is the basic permit that allows you to visit Lhasa and nearby areas.

2. Alien's Travel Permit (ATP)

Required for visiting "unopened" areas outside Lhasa, such as Everest Base Camp, Namtso Lake, and most areas outside the city.

3. Military Permit

Required for visiting border areas near Nepal, India, and other sensitive regions.

How to Apply

  • 1. **Book with a registered agency**: You cannot apply for permits independently. Work with a licensed Tibet travel agency.
  • 2. **Provide documents**: Submit a copy of your passport and Chinese visa at least 20 days before your trip.
  • 3. **Wait for processing**: Permits typically take 10-15 business days to process.
  • 4. **Receive your permit**: Your agency will send the permit to your hotel in mainland China before you fly to Tibet.
  • Important Tips

  • Start the application process at least 3-4 weeks before your planned arrival
  • Your itinerary must be fixed before applying
  • Permits are checked at airports, train stations, and checkpoints throughout Tibet
  • Keep your permit with you at all times during your Tibet visit
  • 2025 Updates

As of 2025, the permit process remains largely the same, but processing times may vary during peak season (April-October). We recommend applying as early as possible.
