About This Attraction
The Road to the "Secret Lotus"
1.Hidden within the rugged folds of the: Himalayas in southeastern Tibet lies a route that is more than just a road; it is a journey through geological time and ecological diversity. The Zhamo Highway (Zhamo Gonglu), connecting Zhamu Town in Bomi County to Metok County (Motuo), spans approximately 117 kilometers. It holds the historic distinction of being the lifeline that finally connected China's last county without highway access to the outside world in 2013. This engineering marvel traverses the heart of the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon nature reserve, offering a driving experience often described as traveling from the "Arctic to the Tropics" in a matter of hours.
One Mountain, Four Seasons
2.The most defining characteristic of the Zhamo: Highway is its dramatic vertical drop and the resulting ecological miracle known as "One mountain, four seasons, ten miles different days". The journey begins in the high-altitude, snow-covered realm of Bomi, crossing the formidable Galong La mountain range. As the road descends rapidly—dropping over 2,000 meters in elevation—travelers witness a breathtaking transition of vegetation zones. The landscape shifts from icy glaciers and alpine meadows to coniferous forests, broad-leaved forests, and finally, lush subtropical rainforests filled with banana trees and humid mists. This "vertical landscape" corridor is a living museum of biology, showcasing the immense biodiversity of the canyon region.
3.The Gateway: Galong La Snow Mountain
The journey's first major challenge and visual highlight is the Galong La Snow Mountain (Galong La Xueshan). Before the tunnel was built, this pass was a formidable barrier of ice and snow. Today, the Galong La Tunnel serves as a portal between two worlds. At the tunnel entrance (approx. 3,700m), visitors are often greeted by vast snowfields and glaciers. Upon exiting the tunnel, the climate and scenery begin their dramatic transformation, marking the descent into the humid river valleys below. The contrast between the blinding white snow at the pass and the verdant green awaiting below is visually shocking and unforgettable.
A Gallery of Waterfalls and Canyons
As the highway winds its way down, particularly between the 52K and 80K markers, the scenery becomes a symphony of water and rock. This section is renowned for its density of waterfalls, which cascade down from the high cliffs into the abyss below. Some falls are like delicate silk threads, while others roar with power, fed by the melting snows above. The road clings to the precipitous canyon walls of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, offering glimpses of the river's raw power as it carves through the earth. Along the way, viewpoints allow travelers to gaze upon the majestic Guoguo Tang Great Bend, where the river makes a sharp U-turn around a lush peninsula, epitomizing the grandeur of the canyon.
A Testament to Human Will
4.The Zhamo: Highway is also a landscape of history and resilience. Known as a "Geological Museum of Disasters," the route was notoriously difficult to construct due to frequent landslides, avalanches, and mudslides. The road stands as a testament to the decades of struggle to break Metok's isolation. Driving this route offers a profound sense of respect for the power of nature and the determination of those who built the path. Arriving in Metok County town, surrounded by green hills and oxygen-rich air, feels like reaching a hidden island of life after a perilous voyage through the clouds.
