Flowing like a jade belt through the heart of the mountains, the Wuyang River is the soul and mother river of Zhenyuan Ancient Town. Located in Zhenyuan County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in Guizhou Province, this scenic waterway originates from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and flows northeast into the Yuan River. With a total length of about 257 kilometers, the 30-kilometer section winding through Zhenyuan is the crown jewel of the region. Often praised as the "Premier River of Eastern Guizhou" and "Guizhou's Li River," the Wuyang River offers a poetic landscape of karst peaks, azure waters, and ancient civilization. While it does not individually hold UNESCO World Heritage status, it is the core landscape of the National 5A-level Zhenyuan Ancient Town.

To fully appreciate this geological wonder, visitors can climb to the viewing platform at Heping Village to see the "Yin and Yang" pattern, or take a boat cruise to immerse themselves in the "green corridor" where the mountains and ancient buildings are reflected in the calm, emerald water.

Historically known as "Yangshui" or "Zhenshui," the river's significance rose during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty when Zhenyuan became a strategic military fortress. For centuries, the Wuyang River served as a vital water transport artery connecting Guizhou to Central China, earning it the reputation of the "Throat of Guizhou and Chu". The river witnessed the transformation of Zhenyuan from a border garrison to a bustling commercial hub where merchants gathered and diverse cultures mingled. Legend holds that the river is protected by a Green Dragon, and the Tai Chi shape was drawn by celestial beings to harmonize the energy of the land.
