The Floating Table in the Clouds: Wawu Mountain and the Kingdom of the Dove Flowers
About This Attraction
The "Table Mountain of the East"
1.Located in Hongya: County, Meishan City, Sichuan Province, Wawu Mountain National Forest Park (Wawushan) stands as a geological miracle on the edge of the Sichuan Basin. Situated approximately 180 kilometers from Chengdu and 120 kilometers from Meishan, this National 4A Tourist Attraction is celebrated as the "Table Mountain of the East" and the "Soul of Water in Sichuan." The mountain is a massive mesa (flat-topped mountain) constructed of basalt and limestone, formed by the Yan Mountain movement hundreds of millions of years ago. Its defining feature is the Wawu Ding (Wawu Summit), a gigantic flat plateau at an altitude of 3,522 meters, covering an area of over 10 square kilometers. From a distance, the mountain resembles a colossal tiled roof ("Wawu") floating above a sea of clouds, with steep, fortress-like cliffs dropping over 2,000 meters on all sides. This unique landform makes it the largest table mountain in Southwest China and one of the most spectacular viewing platforms in the world for witnessing the sea of clouds, the sunrise, and the "Buddha's Light" phenomenon.
A Sanctuary of the Dove Flower
Wawu Mountain is biologically recognized as one of the best-preserved primitive ecological zones at its latitude globally. With a forest coverage rate of over 96%, it is a vibrant "Natural Oxygen Bar" and a "Green Lung" for the region. The park is world-renowned as the "Hometown of the Chinese Dove Tree" (Davidia involucrata). Every spring (April to May), over 300,000 mu (20,000 hectares) of wild Dove Trees bloom, their large white bracts fluttering in the wind like thousands of white doves perched on the branches, creating a breathtaking "snow in spring" spectacle. Beyond the flora, the dense primitive fir forests and bamboo groves provide a sanctuary for rare wildlife. It is a habitat for the Red Panda, Takin (Wildebeest), Clouded Leopard, and over 200 bird species, making it a paradise for nature photographers and birdwatchers who come to capture the vibrancy of this "Noah's Ark" of biodiversity.
The Taoist "Seventh Grotto-Heaven"
Culturally, Wawu Mountain holds a significant place in the history of Chinese Taoism. It is considered one of the birthplaces of the religion, historically identified as the "Weiyu Dongtian" (Seventh Grotto-Heaven). Legends suggest that Laozi (the founder of Taoism) rode his green ox through the Hangu Pass to seek seclusion here, leaving behind relics like the "Alchemy Well" and "Sutra Lecturing Platform" on the summit plateau. In history, it was as famous as Emei Mountain and Qingcheng Mountain. During the Qing Dynasty, the mountain was a hub of religious activity with numerous temples and shrines blending Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist elements. Although many ancient structures have faded into history, the spiritual aura remains strong. Walking along the misty Elephant Pool (Xiang'er Yan) or the winding wooden boardwalks, visitors can feel the ancient "Unity of Man and Nature" philosophy that has permeated these cliffs for millennia.
A World of Ice and Waterfalls
Wawu Mountain is also a land of water and ice. The plateau's unique geology gives rise to numerous waterfalls cascading from the cliffs, with the magnificent Lanxi Waterfall dropping a staggering 104 meters. In summer, these waterfalls create a cool, misty retreat, earning the park the reputation of a premier summer resort. However, winter transforms Wawu Mountain into a fairytale "Ice and Snow World." From November to March, the flat summit is blanketed in thick snow, and the waterfalls freeze into colossal ice curtains and icicles, hanging like crystal chandeliers from the cliffs. The park becomes a hub for winter sports, offering skiing and snow play activities amidst a landscape of rime-covered fir trees and silver peaks. Whether it is the vibrant azaleas of spring, the cool mists of summer, the red leaves of autumn, or the silent white majesty of winter, Wawu Mountain offers a profound connection to the raw power and beauty of nature.
