Located just 5 kilometers south of the Danba county seat in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, the Suopo Ancient Watchtower Group is the most impressive open-air museum of defensive architecture in the region. While Danba is known generally as the "Kingdom of a Thousand Watchtowers," Suopo is the heart of this title. The village boasts the highest concentration of ancient stone towers in the world, with over 80 towers standing tall against the steep mountainside overlooking the Dadu River. unlike the painted beauty of nearby villages, Suopo offers a raw, majestic, and historical atmosphere that transports visitors back to a time of tribal warfare.

Architectural Marvels

2.The defining feature of: Suopo is the sheer density and variety of its watchtowers. Constructed using local stone slabs and yellow mud without the aid of modern pillars or cement, these structures have withstood earthquakes and centuries of weathering.

The towers vary in shape, including square, pentagonal, hexagonal, and even the rare 13-pointed star shape. They rise up to 30 or even 60 meters in height. Historically, these towers served different functions:

History and Culture

The history of these structures dates back over a thousand years, with some foundations originating from the Tang and Han dynasties. The Jiarong Tibetan people built these towers during an era of frequent tribal conflicts. The solidity of these towers was so renowned that during the Qing Dynasty, the Jinchuan campaigns proved difficult for the imperial army due to these stone fortifications.

Culturally, Suopo remains a traditional Jiarong Tibetan settlement. While less commercialized than other spots, it offers an authentic glimpse into rural life. The villagers here are known for their resilience and architectural skills, preserving the ancient techniques of stone masonry that make Danba unique.

The Best Views

Exploring Suopo can be done in two ways. For the most iconic photograph, visitors should stop at the observation deck on the opposite side of the Dadu River. From here, you get a panoramic view of the entire village, where the cluster of tall, brown stone towers rises dramatically from the green slopes and white houses—a skyline unlike any other.

For the adventurous, crossing the bridge and hiking up into the village allows you to touch the ancient stones and look up at the towering heights of these medieval skyscrapers. The interplay of light and shadow on the stone textures during sunrise and sunset makes it a paradise for architectural photographers.
