Shengjinkou Thousand Buddha Caves: A Hidden Spiritual Oasis in the Flaming Mountains

1.The Shengjinkou Thousand Buddha: Caves, also known as the Shengjinkou Grottoes, are a significant Buddhist site located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Turpan City. Nestled at the eastern mouth of the Mutougou Valley where it meets the northern edge of the Flaming Mountains, the site offers a dramatic contrast between the scorched red sandstone cliffs and the ancient spiritual remnants within. At an altitude of roughly 300 meters, the complex currently consists of 10 surviving caves situated along the eastern wall of the valley.

The history of these caves is primarily linked to the Gaochang Uighur Kingdom, flourishing between the 9th and 14th centuries. During this era, Shengjinkou served as a vital center for Buddhist practice and art, reflecting a period when the Uighur people had embraced Buddhism as a state religion. Archaeologically, Shengjinkou has yielded a wealth of multilingual documents, including scripts in Old Uighur, Sogdian, and Han Chinese. These findings underscore Turpan’s role as a major hub on the Silk Road, where diverse linguistic and religious groups interacted.
