Covering over a million mu of fertile alpine grassland, it is recognized as the largest military horse farm in Asia and one of the oldest continuously operating horse breeding centers in the world. The farm’s history began over 2,100 years ago during the Western Han Dynasty, when the legendary General Huo Qubing established it as a strategic base for breeding horses for the imperial cavalry. Throughout the Sui, Tang, Ming, and Qing dynasties, it served as the official royal stud farm. In 1949, it was re-established as the PLA Shandan Military Horse Farm, continuing its long tradition of producing resilient, high-quality horses for national defense and agriculture.
