About This Attraction
The World’s Oldest and Asia’s Largest Horse Farm
1.Located in the heart of the Hexi: Corridor, at the base of the majestic Qilian Mountains, the Shandan Military Horse Farm is a site of unparalleled historical and geographical significance. Covering over a million mu of fertile alpine grassland, it is recognized as the largest military horse farm in Asia and one of the oldest continuously operating horse breeding centers in the world. Situated at an altitude between 2,500 and 3,000 meters, this vast expanse of green provides a stark, beautiful contrast to the arid Gobi deserts of Northwest China.
A Legacy Spanning Two Millennia
The farm’s history began over 2,100 years ago during the Western Han Dynasty, when the legendary General Huo Qubing established it as a strategic base for breeding horses for the imperial cavalry. Throughout the Sui, Tang, Ming, and Qing dynasties, it served as the official royal stud farm. In 1949, it was re-established as the PLA Shandan Military Horse Farm, continuing its long tradition of producing resilient, high-quality horses for national defense and agriculture. At its peak, the farm supported over 400,000 horses.
The Spectacle of "Thousand Horses Galloping"
For many visitors, the defining experience of Shandan is witnessing the "Thousand Horses Galloping" (万马奔腾). When hundreds of horses are driven across the open range, the sound of their hooves echoes like thunder against the mountains, creating a scene of raw power and ancient nomadic spirit that has remained unchanged for centuries. This spectacle is most vivid during the "golden hours" of dawn and dusk when the sunlight paints the grassland in brilliant hues of amber and gold.
Diverse Natural Wonders
Beyond its equine heritage, the farm is home to diverse landscapes. The Xidahe Reservoir and Luaniao Lake appear like blue sapphires embedded in the emerald grass, reflecting the snow-capped peaks of the Qilian Mountains. Explorers can also discover the Kuerxia Forest Canyon, where dense greenery and winding streams offer a sanctuary for local wildlife and a refreshing escape for hikers. Whether it is the vast summer flower fields or the golden "Earth Painting" of autumn, Shandan remains a living testament to the harmony between human history and the natural world.
