About This Attraction
A Monument to Homesickness
1.While the Jokhang: Temple is the spiritual heart of Lhasa, its sister temple, Ramoche Temple (Xiaozao Si), holds a poignant history of longing and devotion. Located just 500 meters north of the Jokhang in the bustling Chengguan District, Ramoche was established in the 7th century (Tang Dynasty) during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo,. It was constructed under the supervision of Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty. Uniquely, the temple's main gate and structure face East, towards Chang'an (modern-day Xi'an), the capital of the Tang Empire. Legend has it that the Princess designed it this way to gaze towards her homeland, embodying her deep nostalgia for her roots while she helped cement the bond between the Han and Tibetan peoples,.
The Treasure of the 8-Year-Old Buddha
Ramoche Temple was originally built to house the life-sized statue of Shakyamuni Buddha at age 12 (Jowo Shakyamuni), which Princess Wencheng brought with her from Chang'an as part of her dowry. However, through the twists of history, this statue was moved to the Jokhang Temple, where it resides today. In a sacred exchange, the statue of Shakyamuni at age 8 (Jowo Mikyo Dorje), originally brought by the Nepalese Princess Bhrikuti and housed in the Jokhang, was moved to Ramoche Temple,. Today, this revered 8-year-old equivalent statue is the spiritual core of Ramoche, attracting endless streams of pilgrims who come to pay homage, offer khata scarves, and perform prostrations.
A Fusion of Styles
Architecturally, Ramoche Temple is a fascinating blend of Han and Tibetan styles. The original craftsmen included both Han Chinese and Tibetans brought by the princesses, creating a unique synthesis. One of its most striking features is the magnificent Golden Roof (Han-style hip-and-gable roof) which glitters under the plateau sun. Although the temple has undergone fires and restorations over the centuries—the current structure largely dates from a later period—it retains the ancient layout and the solemn, mystical atmosphere of early Tibetan Buddhism,. The interplay of the red and white walls with the golden roof creates a stunning visual contrast against the blue sky.
The Upper Tantric College
Beyond its historical origins, Ramoche Temple holds a significant status in the religious hierarchy as the seat of the Upper Tantric College (Gyuto) of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) sect,. It is a center for the study of esoteric Buddhism. Monks here engage in rigorous study and practice of Tantric rituals. Upon entering, visitors are often greeted by the deep, resonant chanting of the monks and the scent of butter lamps and juniper incense, creating an environment of profound spiritual depth. The temple preserves many precious relics, thangkas, and murals that depict the rich tapestry of Tibetan Buddhist history and the lives of great masters.
