About This Attraction
The Pearl of Erhai Lake
1.Located near the picturesque town of: Shuanglang on the northeastern shore of Erhai Lake, Nanzhao Folk Island (Nanzhao Fengqing Dao) is one of the three major islands in the lake. Often referred to as "Erhai Penglai" (a mythical fairyland), this small but culturally dense island covers an area of about 100 mu. Historically, its strategic location and beautiful scenery made it a favored summer resort and patrolling station for the kings of the Nanzhao Kingdom (738–902 AD). Today, it stands as a concentrated showcase of the rich history, religious beliefs, and architectural aesthetics of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms, condensed into a garden-like island setting that floats upon the azure waters,,.
The Legend of Mother Shayi
Upon landing on the island, visitors are greeted by the Shayi Culture Square. This area is dedicated to the mythological origins of the Bai people. According to local legend, the ancestors of the Bai people were born from the union of Mother Shayi and a divine dragon in the waters of Erhai. A magnificent group of copper statues depicting Mother Shayi stands here, representing the deep spiritual connection the local people have with the water and their ancestry. This section of the island offers a profound insight into the tribal roots that predate the grand kingdoms, grounding the visitor in the ancient folklore of the region.
The Royal Summer Palace
Dominating the island's skyline is the Nanzhao Summer Palace (Nanzhao Xinggong). This imposing structure is designed in the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty, reflecting the era when the Nanzhao Kingdom ruled Southwest China. The building serves as a "culture tower" or museum, displaying artifacts, murals, and scenes that reconstruct the royal life and political power of the Nanzhao rulers. Standing on the terraces of the palace offers a commanding view of the lake, allowing visitors to gaze out at the distant Cangshan Mountains and imagine the grandeur of the ancient monarchs who once looked upon the same view,.
The White Marble Guanyin
The spiritual heart of the island is the Yunnan Avalokitesvara (Guanyin) Plaza. Here stands a towering statue of the Goddess of Mercy, carved from Han white marble and reaching a height of 17.56 meters. This statue is unique to the region, often referred to as the "Number One Guanyin in Yunnan." Unlike traditional Chinese representations, this statue embodies the specific "Acuoye Guanyin" style associated with the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms, characterized by a slender figure and distinct ethnic features. The statue radiates a sense of peace and benevolence, standing against the backdrop of the blue sky and water, making it a striking subject for photography and contemplation,.
A Garden of Stone and Water
Beyond its monuments, Nanzhao Folk Island is a landscape masterpiece. The island features a collection of Taihu Stones, weirdly shaped limestone rocks that have been artistically arranged to complement the natural vegetation and water features. Walking paths wind through lush gardens, connecting the cultural sites with quiet spots by the water's edge. Whether you are admiring the "Twelve Zodiac" sculptures or simply sitting by the shore watching the boats glide from Shuanglang, the island offers a harmonious blend of man-made art and natural beauty,.
