Red Spirit of the Loess: A Guide to Nanliang Revolutionary Memorial Hall
About This Attraction
The Red Cradle of the Shangan Region
Located in the northern section of the Qiaoshan Mountains on the border of Shaanxi and Gansu, Nanliang is a site of immense historical significance. On November 7, 1934, revolutionary leaders including Liu Zhidan, Xie Zichang, and Xi Zhongxun established the Shanganbian Soviet Government here. This base holds a unique position in history as the "only surviving" revolutionary base area during the Second Revolutionary Civil War, providing a vital foothold for the Central Red Army following the Long March.
Architectural Grandeur and Commemoration
The current memorial hall was established in 1986 to honor the legacy of the Nanliang revolutionary movement. The complex spans over 33 mu and features a majestic 10-meter-high antique city gate as its entrance. At the heart of the grounds stands a solemn monument inscribed with the names of 608 martyrs, including Taiji, Yang Sen, and Yang Qi. A prominent white sculpture group nearby depicts the heroic unity of the local military and civilians during the revolutionary struggle.
Treasures of History and Education
The museum houses three major exhibition rooms containing a wealth of historical documents, photos, and physical artifacts. Visitors can view inscriptions by national leaders such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Zhu De, along with personal relics belonging to Liu Zhidan. The exhibits provide a comprehensive chronicle of the Shanganbian revolutionary struggle, making it a designated National Patriotic Education Base.
A Red Tourism Cluster
Beyond the main hall, the scenic area includes several integrated historical sites that enrich the visitor experience. These include the Dafengchuan Military-Civilian Production Base, the former residences of Liu Zhidan and Xi Zhongxun at Zaiziwan, and the historic Lenin Primary School. Surrounded by the rich natural resources and the unique "Highland Aesthetics" of the Loess Plateau, the site offers a profound look at how a grand revolutionary movement was sustained in a rugged, remote environment.
