About This Attraction
The Roaring Symphony of the Jinsha River
1.Located at the junction of Lijiang City and: Shangri-La City, Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the world's deepest and most spectacular river canyons. The Jinsha River (the upper reaches of the Yangtze) flows furiously between the towering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5,596 meters) and Haba Snow Mountain, creating a vertical drop of approximately 3,900 meters from peak to river. Extending about 18 kilometers, the gorge narrows to a mere 30 meters at its tightest point, known as the "Middle Tiger Leaping" section. The sound of the crashing waves and the sight of the vertical cliffs piercing the clouds create a wild, natural symphony that evokes awe and reverence in every visitor.
The Legend of the Leaping Tiger
The gorge derives its name from a legendary tale of a majestic tiger. According to Naxi folklore, a tiger, fleeing from a hunter, leaped across the raging river at its narrowest point using a giant rock in the center of the stream as a stepping stone. This rock, now known as the "Tiger Leaping Stone," remains a focal point for visitors, particularly in the Middle Gorge, where one can witness the raw power of the river crashing against it.
A Hiker’s Paradise: The High Trail
2.Tiger Leaping: Gorge is globally renowned as one of the "world's best hiking trails". The famous "High Trail" stretches approximately 22 to 30 kilometers from Qiaotou to Walnut Garden. This route winds high along the side of the Haba Snow Mountain, offering breathtaking views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain across the chasm. Hikers face the challenge of the "28 Bends," a steep ascending switchback, but are rewarded with panoramic scenery and the hospitality of guesthouses like the Tea Horse Guesthouse. Walking this path is not just a physical journey but a trek through the history of the ancient Tea Horse Road, where mule caravans once traveled.
Three Sections of Wonder
3.The gorge is divided into three sections: Upper, Middle, and Lower.
- 4.Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge: This section is famous for its accessible viewing platforms where the river is wide but turbulent, creating dramatic waterfalls and rapids.
- 5.Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge: Known as the most dangerous and thrilling section, here the river drops significantly. Visitors can descend steep "Sky Ladders" to the riverbank to get close to the Tiger Leaping Stone and feel the earth-shaking vibration of the water.
- 6.Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge: Approaching Walnut Garden, this area features towering cliffs and huge stones known as "Mantianxing" (Stars in the Sky) scattered in the river. It offers a quieter experience with rustic Naxi and Tibetan villages.
Cultural Fusion on the Edge
Culturally, Tiger Leaping Gorge serves as a crossroads between the Naxi and Tibetan people. The villages along the trail, such as Walnut Garden, preserve traditional architecture and lifestyles. Visitors can experience the "fire and smoke" (authenticity) of local life, tasting local delicacies like smoked pork ribs hot pot and Naxi Baba (bread), while witnessing the harmonious existence of these ethnic groups amidst the rugged landscape.
