A Sip of History: The Legend and Beauty of Jiuquan’s Western Han Relics
About This Attraction
The Historical Cradle of the Silk Road
1.Located in the Suzhou District of Jiuquan: City, Gansu Province, the Jiuquan Western Han Dynasty Wine Spring Relics (also known as Jiuquan Spring Lake Park) is a unique site that blends ancient frontier history with the elegance of classical gardens. Spanning 270,000 square meters at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters, it is the only city in China named after a spring, standing as a vital cultural landmark along the ancient Silk Road.
The Legend of the Wine Spring
The site is most famous for its connection to the legendary Han Dynasty general Huo Qubing. In 121 BC, during the Western Han expedition against the Xiongnu, Huo Qubing achieved a massive victory. To celebrate, Emperor Wu sent a jar of precious wine to the front lines. Seeing that there was not enough wine for all his soldiers, Huo Qubing poured the wine into the local spring, allowing his entire army to share the imperial reward. This act of camaraderie and spirit gave the spring—and subsequently the city—its name, "Jiuquan" (Wine Spring).
Architecture and Landscape
The relics offer a rare aesthetic fusion where the rugged "Frontier spirit" meets the delicate "Jiangnan garden style". Visitors can explore ancient structures from the Ming and Qing dynasties, such as the Wenchang Pavilion, which features exquisite carvings and classical design. The park is also home to the "Left’s Willows" (Zuo Gong Liu), ancient willow trees planted by General Zuo Zongtang during the late Qing Dynasty to stabilize the frontier soil.
A Spiritual and Cultural Hub
Beyond its historical monuments, the site remains a center for local life and faith. The Spring Lake within the park provides a serene environment where the clear spring water reflects the distant silhouettes of the Qilian Mountains. Statues of Emperor Han Wudi and Huo Qubing dominate the central plaza, reminding travelers of the grand ambitions of the Han Dynasty and the deep historical roots of this oasis city.
