The Nine Dragons of Luoping: A Journey to China's Most Magnificent Waterfall Group
About This Attraction
The Majesty of the "Nine Dragons"
Located approximately 22 kilometers northeast of Luoping County in Qujing City, Yunnan Province, the Jiulong Waterfalls (Nine Dragons Waterfalls) are hailed as one of the most beautiful waterfall groups in China. Carved by the Jiulong River as it flows through the karst landscape, this scenic area features a spectacular series of ten distinct cascades packed closely together within a short distance of about 4 kilometers. Due to the geological erosion over millennia, the riverbed drops significantly, creating a layered landscape where waterfalls of varying shapes and sizes—some wide and thunderous, others narrow and gentle—tumble down the valley like a silver dragon dancing in the mountains. It has been recognized by Chinese National Geographic as one of the "Six Most Beautiful Waterfalls in China" and is a National 4A-level Tourism Scenic Area.
The First Waterfall: Shenlong
The crown jewel of the complex is the Shenlong Waterfall (Divine Dragon Waterfall), known as the "First Waterfall of Jiulong." Standing 56 meters high and 112 meters wide, it is the grandest and most awe-inspiring of the group. When the water volume is high, the river crashes down from the sheer cliff with the force of a thousand troops, creating a deafening roar and a mist that rises into the sky, often forming rainbows under the sunlight. Beneath the falls lies a deep, semi-circular pool that reflects the power of the cascading water, making it a favorite spot for photographers capturing the raw energy of nature.
A Symphony of Water and Flowers
1.Beyond the massive: Shenlong, the area offers a diverse rhythm of water scenes. The Lovers' Waterfall (Qingren Pu) appears as two separate streams flowing side by side, resembling a couple intimately whispering, surrounded by lush vegetation and a serene atmosphere. Another unique section is the Shilong Manyou (Wandering Stone Dragon), where the river flows gently over a calcified shoal, creating a sparkling, textured surface that looks like dragon scales under the sun. The best time to visit is often in February and March, when the surrounding Luoping Rapeseed Flower Fields are in full bloom. From the observation deck at the top of the mountain, visitors can gaze down at the silver waterfalls cutting through an endless sea of golden yellow flowers, a visual feast of color and contrast unique to this region.
Legends of the Buyi People
2.The Jiulong: Waterfalls are not just a geological wonder but also a place of deep cultural significance. According to local Buyi ethnic legends, the area was once an ocean that dried up, and nine black dragons came here to battle for territory before eventually deciding to protect the land together, transforming into the waterfalls we see today. The Buyi people have lived here for generations, maintaining a harmonious relationship with the river. During traditional festivals like the Water Splashing Festival or the Buyi Singing Festival (San Yue San), the area comes alive with folk songs, bamboo rafting, and colorful ethnic costumes, adding a vibrant human touch to the natural landscape.
