About This Attraction
The "Purest Ecological Heaven" in Western Sichuan
1.Located in Shangduke: Township, Rangtang County, in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, the Gesala Ecological Tourism Area is a pristine gem hidden on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Situated adjacent to National Highway 248 and approximately 450 kilometers from Chengdu, this vast scenic area covers a core zone of about 300 square kilometers with an altitude ranging from 3,200 to 4,500 meters. It is celebrated as the "Purest Tibetan Ecological Heaven in Western Sichuan" and a "Secret Meadow of the Oriental Little Switzerland." Unlike the crowded tourist trails of Jiuzhaigou, Gesala remains a wild and original sanctuary. The landscape is a magnificent tapestry of high-mountain meadows, snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and primitive forests. Here, the air is exceptionally pure, rich in negative oxygen ions, serving as a natural oxygen bar where the only sounds are the whispers of the wind and the call of wildlife. Visitors can witness herds of Tibetan antelopes and blue sheep sprinting across the golden grasslands, or spot rare black-necked cranes dancing by the wetlands, offering a glimpse into the vibrant vitality of the plateau ecosystem.
A Cultural Mosaic of Noso and Jonang
Culturally, Gesala is a fascinating convergence of history and faith. It is recorded as the ancient pasture land of the Noso branch of the Tibetan people (historically related to the Yi people's migration). The area preserves a unique cultural heritage that blends the Tu Si (Chieftain) system with the profound spirituality of the Jonang School of Tibetan Buddhism. The local villages are dotted with ancient Tuzhangfang (Earthen Palm Houses)—distinctive structures with flat, rammed-earth roofs that resemble an open palm, designed to be warm in winter and cool in summer. Inside these homes, the "Fire Pit Culture" thrives; families gather around the central fire to share stories and warmth. The spiritual life is anchored by Jonang monasteries, known for their exquisite murals of the Kalachakra (Time Wheel) and the unique "Emptiness of Other" (Shentong) philosophy. The mysterious Bi Mo culture also influences the region, where priests preside over rituals to worship the mountain and fire gods, using branches of the sacred Cycas tree (revered here as a "God Tree") to pray for harvest and safety.
The Wonder of the "Ten Thousand Mu Flower Sea"
2.The visual climax of: Gesala occurs in summer, when the Ten Thousand Mu Flower Sea bursts into bloom. Endless carpets of azaleas and wildflowers cover the rolling meadows, creating a colorful contrast against the backdrop of snowy peaks and blue skies. Walking along the meadow trails, visitors are immersed in a "flower ocean" that ripples with the wind. The area is also home to the serene Gesala Lake, a highland wetland that acts as a mirror for the surrounding mountains and a habitat for migratory birds. Legends say the lake was formed by the tears of a fairy, and rainbows frequently appear over its waters after rain, adding a touch of magic to the landscape. Whether exploring the mysterious primitive forests where ancient trees tower overhead, or engaging in the energetic Datie Dance during festivals, Gesala offers a deeply immersive experience into a world where humanity and nature coexist in timeless harmony.
