About This Attraction
A Geological Marvel Hidden in the Canyon
1.Located within the Mount Emei Grand: Canyon area, past the tranquil Qingyin Pavilion (Clear Sound Pavilion), Yixiantian (A Thread of Sky) is one of the most thrilling geological wonders of the mountain. As visitors hike upstream along the Heilong River (Black Dragon River), the valley walls suddenly tighten, forming a narrow gorge. The limestone cliffs on both sides rise steeply like knife-cut walls, reaching heights of hundreds of meters, while the gap between them narrows to mere meters. When walking along the plank road built into the cliff face, one can look up to see the blue sky reduced to a slender, winding ribbon, giving the spot its poetic name, "A Thread of Sky". This dramatic landscape is a result of forceful water erosion cutting through the limestone over millions of years, creating a cool, secluded, and awe-inspiring atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the open summits of the mountain.
The Gateway to the Monkey Kingdom
Yixiantian serves as the scenic gateway leading to the famous Mount Emei Ecological Monkey Zone. Passing through this narrow corridor feels like entering a different world, where the noise of the human world fades away, replaced by the roar of the rushing river and the chatter of wild Tibetan macaques. The path here is a hanging plank road (zhandao) that clings to the precipice, allowing visitors to walk directly above the turbulent waters. The environment is lush with primitive vegetation, including rare plants like the dove tree. The high density of negative oxygen ions makes the air incredibly fresh, offering a "forest bath" experience. It is a place where the wild nature of Emei Mountain is on full display, bridging the gap between the serene temples below and the wilder, animal-inhabited regions above.
Legends of Bodhisattvas and Dragons
2.Like many sites on Mount: Emei, Yixiantian is steeped in legend. It is said that in ancient times, the path was blocked by these massive cliffs. The Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (Puxian Pusa), hearing the struggles of the local people, used his divine power to slash the mountain open, creating this passage to save the people and allow them to traverse the mountains. Another legend links the "Double Flying Waterfall" nearby to a dragon and a phoenix, symbolizing yin and yang harmony. The gorge itself gives a sense of "rebirth" as one squeezes through the narrowest points to emerge into the wider valley beyond. Whether viewed through the lens of geology or mythology, walking through Yixiantian is a journey into the heart of the earth.
