About This Attraction
A Living Folk Museum on the Grassland
1.Located in Haiyan: County, Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, Dayu Tribe (Dayu Buluo) sits amidst the renowned Jinyintan Grassland (Gold and Silver Beach). Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,100 meters, this is not merely a scenic spot or a commercial settlement, but a spiritual home and experience base centered on the culture of the Arou Tribe of the Qinghai Lake area. It is often described as a "living folk museum" where culture is not locked away in glass cases but flows through daily life. Here, visitors can see black yak-hair tents that have been used for hundreds of years, witness the smoke rising from the stoves in the morning light, and observe the devout Tibetan herders herding on the grassland. It offers a rare opportunity to step into the authentic life of the plateau, bridging the gap between tourists and the deep-rooted traditions of the land.
The Romance of "In That Distant Place"
2.The cultural significance of Dayu: Tribe is intertwined with the famous Chinese folk song, "In That Distant Place" (Zai Na Yaoyuan De Difang). It is said that in the 1940s, the legendary musician Wang Luobin met a beautiful Tibetan girl named Zhuoma right here on the Jinyintan Grassland. This beautiful encounter inspired him to write the timeless melody that has touched generations. Today, the tribe features a Wang Luobin Cultural Square with statues and landscape installations commemorating this history. It serves as a spiritual landmark where visitors can sit quietly, watch the grassland turn golden in the sunset, and feel the artistic conception of the song, connecting with the romance and history of the land.
A Hub for Cycling and Culture
Dayu Tribe is also known as a famous station and starting point for cycling culture around Qinghai Lake. It has a professional cycling base providing rental services and logistical support. Unlike riding strictly on the paved road around the lake, here you can ride a mountain bike deep into the grasslands surrounding the tribe. The route offers an immersive experience of "riding between heaven and earth," with endless green grass, white sheep, and rolling green mountains on one side, and the majestic sand dunes on the other. Along the way, cyclists can interact with local children and herders, making it a journey of cultural exchange as much as physical activity.
Immersive Tibetan Experience
The tribe offers a deep dive into the lifestyle of the Arou Tribe. The Folk Museum displays the history, costumes, production tools, and religious beliefs of the tribe. More impressively, the "Black Yak Hair Tents" exhibit authentic mobile homes of the nomads, warm in winter and cool in summer. Visitors can enter these tents, sit on carpets, drink butter tea, and listen to the elders tell stories of the family and the grassland. As night falls, the tribe comes alive with bonfire parties. Visitors and locals join hands to dance the Guozhuang (a traditional Tibetan circle dance) under the vast, starry sky. The clear highland air makes it an exceptional spot for stargazing, where the Milky Way often looks like a jade belt across the sky.
