About This Attraction
An Oasis in the Qaidam Basin
1.Located in the northern margin of the vast: Qaidam Basin in Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, Da Qaidam Hot Spring (also widely known as Snow Mountain Hot Spring or Xueshan Wenquan) is a rare geothermal gem hidden amidst the rugged high-altitude wilderness. Situated on the southern slopes of the majestic Dakendaban Mountain (a branch of the Qilian Mountains), roughly 10 kilometers north of Da Qaidam Town, this hot spring offers a surreal contrast between the arid, wind-swept landscapes of the basin and the warm, soothing embrace of natural thermal waters. It serves as a vital oasis for travelers journeying through the harsh yet beautiful terrain of northwest China, providing a sanctuary of warmth in a land often characterized by its cold, high-altitude climate.
The Water of Life
The hot spring is renowned for its high water temperature and exceptional water quality. It is the only natural geothermal spring found in the Qaidam Basin. The water gushes from the cracks in the mountain rocks, carrying heat generated deep within the earth's crust. Temperatures at the source can reach upwards of 80°C (176°F), cooling to a comfortable bathing temperature in the various pools scattered along the mountain slope. The water is rich in various trace elements and minerals such as fluorine, boron, and radon, which are believed by locals and traditional medicine practitioners to have therapeutic effects on skin diseases, arthritis, and cardiovascular conditions. Historically, this site has been a place of healing, where local herdsmen and travelers on the ancient routes would stop to cleanse and rejuvenate.
A Bath with a View
2.What sets Da Qaidam Hot: Spring apart is its breathtaking setting. The pools are often terraced into the mountainside, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. In the winter or early spring, the contrast is stark and beautiful: visitors can soak in the steaming hot water while gazing up at the snow-capped peaks of Dakendaban Mountain just above them. The steam rising from the pools mingles with the crisp, thin highland air, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. The facility has evolved from a wild spring into a more developed resort area, offering both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as wooden boardwalks that wind through the steam and shrubbery, allowing visitors to explore the source of the springs. Camping facilities are also available nearby, allowing adventurers to stay close to nature.
Gateway to the Emerald Lake
A visit to the hot spring is often combined with a trip to the nearby Da Qaidam Emerald Lake (Feicui Hu). Just a short drive away, this salt lake offers a completely different aquatic spectacle with its vibrant turquoise and green waters, formed by high mineral concentrations. After a dusty day exploring the salt lakes or driving the long stretches of the G315 highway (often called the most beautiful highway in China), Da Qaidam Hot Spring provides the perfect conclusion—a place to wash away the dust of the journey and relax muscles weary from the high altitude. It stands as a testament to the geological diversity of Qinghai, where fire and ice coexist to create a unique travel experience.
