About This Attraction
The Last Secret Realm Under Everest
1.Hidden deep within the folds of the: Himalayas in Dingjie County, Shigatse City, Tibet, lies a secluded paradise known as Chentang Valley (Chentanggou). Situated on the China-Nepal border in the southwest of Dingjie County, this valley is often hailed as "the last secret land of the Sherpas under Mount Everest". Unlike the high-altitude arid landscapes typical of Tibet, Chentang Valley offers a lush, subtropical environment due to its unique location where the Indian Ocean monsoons penetrate the mountains. The valley's elevation drops dramatically to between 2,040 and 2,500 meters, creating a vertical landscape where one can experience "four seasons in one mountain and different weather every ten miles". It is a place where snowy peaks, glaciers, primitive forests, and warm river valleys coexist in a stunning display of nature's diversity.
The Home of the Sherpas
Chentang is one of the main settlements of the Sherpa people in China. The Sherpas, famous worldwide for their mountaineering prowess, have lived in this isolated valley for centuries. Chentang Town itself is a living museum of their culture. The town is built precariously on steep mountain slopes, resembling a massive hanging garden or a fortress in the sky. The traditional wooden houses, often multi-storied and built with local timber and stone, are densely packed and connected by winding paths, creating a labyrinthine atmosphere. Here, visitors can observe the unique customs of the Sherpas, including their colorful clothing, the "Sherpa Dance" which reflects their optimism and resilience, and their traditional lifestyle that blends farming and herding.
A Geological and Ecological Wonder
2.The valley is carved by the Pengqu: River (Peng Qu), which originates from the Shishapangma peak. As the river cuts through the Himalayas, it forms a deep and rugged canyon filled with roaring waters and surrounded by dense primitive forests. This ecological haven is home to rare flora and fauna, making it a biodiversity hotspot. One of the most spectacular sights is the Nine-Peak Snow Mountain (Jiufeng Xueshan) waterfall, where massive cascades tumble down from high cliffs against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and lush green forests, creating a visual shock of "snow mountains and rainforests" in one frame.
3.The Miracle of: Hot Springs and Millet Terraces
4.Near Cangmu: Village (Zangga Cun), visitors can find natural hot springs bubbling up from the mountainside. These springs are renowned for their high water temperature and rich mineral content, offering a natural spa experience amidst the wild landscape. Surrounding the hot springs are the famous millet terraces (Jizhua Gu). This ancient crop, known locally as "Chicken Claw Millet," is a staple of the Sherpa diet and represents their agricultural heritage. In late summer and early autumn, the golden millet fields contrast beautifully with the green mountains, painting a picture of an idyllic "Peach Blossom Spring".
A Historic Border Post
Historically, Chentang Valley was a crucial passage for trade and cultural exchange between Tibet and Nepal. It served as one of the ancient trade routes where tea, salt, and other goods were exchanged. The valley preserves traces of this history, acting as a bridge connecting different civilizations. Today, it remains a border town where the cultures of China and Nepal blend seamlessly, offering a unique travel experience that combines adventure, history, and anthropology.
