About This Attraction
The Brave Lake of the North
1.In the vast hinterland of the Northern: Tibet (Qiangtang) Plateau, north of the majestic Nyainqentanglha Mountains, lies a gemstone often overlooked by the rushing travelers: Bamu Tso (also known as Bamucuo). Located in Baingoin County (Bangor), Nagqu City, this lake sits at an altitude of 4,555 meters and covers an area of approximately 180 square kilometers. In Tibetan, "Bamu" translates to "Brave" or "Warrior," earning it the title of the "Brave Lake". Unlike its famous neighbor Namtso, which is crowded with tourists, Bamu Tso retains a primitive, desolate, and overwhelmingly quiet beauty. It is a place where the wind whispers ancient stories, and the water reflects the soul of the plateau without interruption.
A Symphony of Colors and Light
Bamu Tso is renowned among photographers for its incredible color palette. The lake acts as a massive mirror, and its colors shift dramatically with the changing light and shadows of the plateau clouds. Under the clear blue sky, the water can appear as a deep, mysterious sapphire; when the clouds roll in, it might turn into a vibrant turquoise or a milky green. The shoreline is long and winding, creating various bays and peninsulas that offer diverse angles for viewing. To the south, the snow-capped peaks of the Nyainqentanglha range stand guard, their white summits reflecting perfectly in the calm waters, creating a classic Tibetan landscape of "snow mountains and holy lakes" that is visually stunning.
The Legend of the Sister Lake
Culturally and spiritually, Bamu Tso is deeply connected to the holy lake Namtso and the holy mountain Nyainqentanglha. In local folklore, Bamu Tso is considered the sister of Namtso. While Namtso is the wife of the mountain god Nyainqentanglha, Bamu Tso is viewed as a guardian or a relative who resides nearby. In the ancient Bon religion and Tibetan Buddhism, the lake is believed to be the dwelling place of the Dragon God (Naga), possessing spiritual power to gather fortune and protect the land. Although it does not see the massive pilgrimages that Namtso does, local herders still revere it, often walking around the lake to pray for the well-being of their livestock and families.
A Stop on the Ancient Salt Road
Beyond its scenic beauty, Bamu Tso holds a fragment of history from the "Highland Salt Road." In the past, when salt was a precious commodity, caravans of yaks and sheep would traverse the harsh Qiangtang uninhabited areas to transport salt from the northern salt lakes to the agricultural areas in the south. Bamu Tso served as a vital water source and resting point on this arduous journey. The lake witnessed the hardships and the resilience of the salt men, adding a layer of human history to its natural grandeur. Today, driving past the lake, one can almost imagine the sound of yak bells echoing in the wind.
A Sanctuary for Highland Wildlife
Ecologically, Bamu Tso is a paradise for high-altitude wildlife. Located on the edge of the Qiangtang National Nature Reserve, the lake's surrounding meadows are lush and fertile. It is a common sight to see herds of Tibetan antelopes and Tibetan gazelles grazing leisurely by the lakeside. The lake also serves as a habitat for various birds, including the black-necked crane and bar-headed goose. The harmonious existence of these wild creatures against the backdrop of the vast blue water and the towering snow mountains makes Bamu Tso a vibrant ecosystem, offering visitors a glimpse into the raw vitality of the Third Pole.
